just recently picked up a nice home made birdhouse at the leesburg garden show last weekend.

No birds yet, do I need to lure them with food?

Depending on the type of birdhouse you got, some breed of birds are picky about where the entrance faces, etc. For example, Bluebird houses should be mounted in such a way that the entrance hole is approximately five feet above the ground and facing away from prevailing winds. Food probably won't lure them as much as appropriate building materials nearby, etc, in my opinion. Once again, that's dependent on the type of birdhouse you got, such as a Bluebird, Wren, Chickadee, etc.

It's possible that the type of birdhouse you purchased is suitable for birds that have already started nesting. Placement is also important as is the height from the ground. No you do not need to lure the birds...they shop around for homes just as humans do. Size of the entrance and location, location, location is everything ;)

It's very pretty. In my experience, which I'll admit is limited, those decorative houses are more for human decoration than actual bird usage. We've had very good luck with the standard utilitarian-looking bluebird house, which is built exactly the way bluebirds like and was occupied from maybe the second spring that we had it out. Sometimes sparrows have nested in it but often we've had bluebirds. If it's on your deck it may be too close to human activity for them to get comfortable, so you might try posting it on the edge of your yard, and probably up about 6' off the ground. But then again, we've also had birds nest in the wreath on our front door so who knows - you might get a bird family to move into your birdhouse after a while. I think that looks like a wren house: http://mdc.mo.gov/nathis/woodwork/ww4/ . Good luck!

American Goldfinches or Carolina Chickadees have been known to nest in these type of houses. Good luck. It's so much fun when you have a nest, to watch the comings and goings of the parents. And then when the little ones fledge.
