I am wondering if there are any suggestions out there for a nice place to go for a little family picnic this spring. I am looking for a somewhat secluded spot within an hour or so's drive. I was thinking Sky Meadows or somewhere in Shenandoah NP, but wonder if there is someplace better out there. Nice views and/or spring flowers would be a plus. (Are the dogwoods still flowering at higher elevations?)

Hiddencroft winery (http://www.hiddencroftvineyards.com/ ) in Lovettsville lets you bring a picnic lunch and is a nice quiet place. The wine is pretty good and the people are very nice.

Have you considered going to the National Arboretum (in NE DC) - it is beautiful. There is another park in Vienna (I can remember the name, but I think it's Sky Lark or Hidden Meadow) that is amazing, we went a few weeks ago and my little guy LOVED it.

Thanks for the suggestions (although I rules out the wineries - not really fun for a pregnant chic and her 4 yo). We actually ended up going to Sky Meadows today, which was nice, though we didn't sit on the other side of the visitors' center to see the good view.

We drove by the Virginia Arboretum today, and I think we'll have to go there someday. I do love the DC arboretum, and I want to go to Meadowlark someday, but I had ruled it out because you can't picnic in the actual park (do you know if the adjacent picnic area is nice?).
