A very under-diagnosed disease in the United States, Celiac Disease means the body will not digest/process gluten, wheat, barley or rye. In Italy 1 in 100have the disease and children are mandatorily screened by 6. If this disease is not caught in time, people can die of lymphoma, Addison's Disease, or several other cancers. Some people choose to eat Gluten Free as a lifestyle choice.

My daughter and I both have Celiac. I am looking to start a thread in liu of a support group, to recommend tasty foods, restaurants, etc.

Our favorite restaurants include MonAmi Gabi in Reston Town Center. You can order the gluten free appetizer, of The Grainless Baker toast and an olive/carrot salsa. A separate menu is provided of Gluten Free Selections and Desserts.

Check out The Gluten Free Checklist online also for approved groceries, as well as candies, and alcohol. Udi's makes GF sandwich bread which does not have to be toasted to be good. And blueberry muffins and other items online.

Are there any other celiacs out there? Any favorite foods?

    quinoa is gluten free

Trader Joes has a lots of GF foods. I don't look for it b/c I have the gut of a billy goat and can unfortunately tolerate any food except shrimp :) but I notice it on many packages...

Hi, I'm a celiac and my son also follows a gluten free diet. I have not tried MonAmi Gabi yet, I just recently heard they had a GF menu, but I do want to try it. I am very sensitive to cross contamination and have been sick after eating at restaurants with GF menus. I have had good luck with Lilit cafe in Bethesda.

Do you get your Udi's at Whole foods? The Udi's bagels they carry there are excellent too! I am also really fond of Schar's pasta (Wegmans) and Against the Grain breads and pizza crust (Wegmans or WFs.) That pizza crust is by far the best I have ever tasted, better than a lot of "wheat" pizzas. So GOOD!

My son love's Annie's Rice Pasta Mac and Cheese. By far the cheapest place to buy this is Target.

FYI Redon1, Trader Joe's has a bad reputation in the celiac community for cross contamination in a lot of there products that are labeled "contains no gluten ingredients." The exceptions are the 3 or 4 products they carry that are made in a gluten free environment.

I do want to add that Cafe Opera is just superb about making gluten free fried rice for my son, he loves it and they are so good about giving us ingredient lists for sauces and stuff.

If you guys are interested in doing your own baking I have a great chocolate cake dessert recipe that is gluten-free. I'll have to dig it up but I could post it here.

Kind Kupcakes, a local business, offers gluten free cupcakes. I've tried the regular cupcakes and they are amazing!

+1,000 on chantell's. Yes we get a gluten free cake every year for birthdays and you can't tell the difference.

Also I use to buy the SAMI's Bakery products from Whole Foods and discovered that they (the bakery) has a website and they ship.

You should try the Flax Bread/Chips and Breads. Once a month I buy a case of the Cinnamon & Plain Flax Chips, so yummy and the bonus is my toddler loves too.
