Does anyone have a recommendation for a good local source to buy a bushel of crabs for the 4th? I'd prefer not to have to drive downtown if I can avoid it.

    Thanks!

Maine Avenue fish market in DC. It's worth the drive, buy them right off the boat.

We go to the local international markets for our crabs. Much cheaper and you can pick your own (they sell by the pound). You could probably call ahead to request a bushel.

We got some from "Fresh Catch Seafood Market" in Great Falls last summer and they were as good as any medium sized crabs I've had at Cantler's or the Quarter Deck. I called ahead to reserve my order and then just stopped in when they were ready.

Here is the link to their website:

We went last summer and the crabs were good. It's got the same low rent atmosphere as Capt. Pells but it smelled a little better. I don't remember enough to compare the prices but I would definitely go back.

Hooked in Sterling has had a sign up indicating that they have blue crabs on the weekends. I'd check the price first before heading over there.

    Mmmmmmm crabs are so heavenly.

Re: Local Source for Good Crabs?

    Hi,

Try Blue Ridge Seafood in Gainesville, VA area. Great blue crabs we had last weekend for a party of 40--20 adults/20 kids. Fried/broiled seafood platters are great, fried frog legs, the best homemade cole slaw and hushpuppies this side of VA, and fresh desserts too.

    Web site is below--

    www.blueridgeseafood.net (Blue Ridge Seafood's site/info.)

Hope this helps. Prices were great too. If you go on weekends, go before 4 pm because of traffic. Call for prices.

    Foodie:)

Keep in mind that at the international markets, most of the crabs are females. Not that this is a BAD thing, but they are a little different from the males.
I can't wait to eat some crabs!!!
