Some of these items below were not picked up with the previous company. So please recycle them.

#1-#7 Rigid plastic containers including bottles, jugs, wide-mouth tubs, and trays (clean)

Aluminum food/beverage containers, aluminum foil, aluminum pie pans

    Aerosol cans (empty)

Or Clear, bagged plastic film (grocery bags contained within 1 bag)

For the complete list visit: Broadlands Naturally!

Will they take clean pizza boxes? I believe Fairfax county takes those but not Patriot and I just wanted to verify this as we order pizza every week.

    thanks,

    Shyam

I checked with Patriot. Since they stopped the pick up for composting, pizza boxes are not part of the recycling because of the food stains... ;(

Are you sure they will accept all those plastics? I never saw an updated list of what they accept for Broadlands since the one they put out when they first began the contract.

Do we have to sort our recyclables? or can we just dump them all together in the bin? Thanks.

No need to sort them. Because of the amount of stuff they can take, 64-gallon recycling toters are available for $25 one time rental fee. Or if you wanted to get your own for cheaper here is the info I got from Patriot.

"Yes, they can use the Home Depot containers. However, they would have to be marked on all sides with the recycling symbol and/or the word "recycling" in large letters, and the lid would have to be painted "recycling" blue.

The other problem with these containers is that if you fill them up with a week's worth of recycling, they may be too heavy to lift whereas our toters can be lifted with the automatic lift on the back of the truck. The Home Depot cans would not fit on that lift.

Store-bought cans are also not as durable as the containers we provide and tend to crack and break more easily, so please be sure to point that out as well. We will not be able to provide reimbursement or replace containers that crack or break when they are lifted in the normal course of emptying them and replacing them at the curb.

For these reasons, we would encourage the homeowners to use our containers, but would not disallow the use of the Home Depot ones."

Currently there are about 100 residents in Broadlands using the 64 gallon container. We have one and we easily fill it weekly. One of the best benefit is that when there is wind and rain, trash don't fly around the streets. It gets really annoying. We have an easement and it gets a lot of trash in it that we go in and clean up all the time. It can be easily avoided. I think HOA should consider making it a mandatory to have these containers just for that reason. I know that there are also 48 Gallon ones but Patriot doesn't have them. Remember these containers are same size square at the bottom as the small bins so they really don't take up more space in the garage.

I hope this info is helpful.

If you want to contact Patriot to get the toter here is their info:

We left the recycle-type grocery clear plastic bags from the store out a few times (bundled in one bag with the recycle logo out) and they've always been left behind.

When did they stop the composting? We are putting composting out with yard waste on Mondays, in yard bags; we stopped Jan-March. They are picking it up.

Is there a way that the HOA or the Nature Committee can send (or put a blurb in the newsletter) about the recycle toters being available? We have one and I only found out about it after I called to request 2 additional bins when we transitioned. I have several neighbors who have asked about ours. We fill it weekly and then some. I know the idea is to consume less, but there's too much extraneous packaging for what we buy for a family of 5 :angryfire:

We too have had them not pick up the bag of bags, or they take it with the trash. Does it only have to be grocery bags or can it also be newspaper, dry cleaning and other clear plastic? Maybe that's our problem.

Patriot is not composting at their site but they bring yard waste to the Loudoun county facility.

We have announced that bins are available at the NC and any one calling Patriot will also be given the same information, plus info about ordering a larger recycling bin for an additional fee. The tech committee is currently looking into setting up a new "Trash Information" section at the website. Please see the HOA home page for current information about recycling.

It's good that some questions are being clarified. This will help with improving recycling. I hope residents will consider getting the 64 gallon toter with cover for $25 one time fee. Patriot will drop it off at your address.

About the composting question, here is the answer I got from Patriot ..."At one time, we were picking up food scraps, pizza boxes and newspapers on Mondays with the yard waste, since these things are good for composting. However, it got to the point where people were putting out all recyclables and getting upset with us if we didn't take them, so we stopped offering that option. I think they would see a neighbor putting out newspapers and then they would wrongly assume that it was recycling day so they would put out all of their recycling, rather than just newspapers. It wasn't something that was started right at the beginning of the contract, so we weren't able to inform all of the residents in the community and it just got to be confusing."...

Our committee would like to find ways to promote more and effective recycling. Patriot has been good about answering questions and clarifying some items. Information has been posted before and was in the newsletters as well but I think a refresher can be a good think.

We'll most likely get the 64 tote, that way they can take that and we can give them back our two bins. And then they won't beat up our additional trash can that I have in my pullout bins in the island...one of those is for regular trash, one for recycling.
