I guess the point is that the signage does violate HOA rules. It's not a big deal to anyone until others in the neighborhood start posting signs and light boards in their yards and someone displays something offensive to another. Signs, etc are either accepted for all or none - you can't selectively ban.

I think it is funny that this is tolerated, and even found amusing, and obviously been going on for years....and yet in a similar thread today there is discussion about possibly being in violation because your pickets are spaced too wide/not wide enough, your grass in your fenced in back yard is too tall etc. Trust me...I LOVE ME SOME HOA!!! I'd love to be on the violations patrol...starting with the people who can't manage to cut their grass much less operate a trimmer.

I have no problem with their signs and so far they have been tasteful and kind of cute? Makes me wonder who the creative person is? However, I agree 'rules are rules' and I would not want to see this carried on further in other yards, etc... AND personally I wish this same house would use the money spent on ink/paper/supplies for the signs to replace their garage light fixture (which has been busted out for many months) instead of the signs.

On that note, during our walks, we've noticed some homes around starting to looking a bit shabby (some in need of mowing, landscape attention, painting, repairs, powerwashing, etc...) and prefer the HOA spend the time hounding these homes to please spruce up! Not trying to be an uptight neighbor but sometimes just a little effort and often minimal expense can make a BIG difference!

    Thank you.

We have our covenant people working on those very issues right now.

I love this topic (HOA enforcement) opinion is equally divided who think the HOA does too much and the HOA doesn't do enough.
    Let the debate continue...........................

My issue is that if the HOA is not (or selectively) enforcing the rules, then how do they have a leg to stand on for other violations.

Enforce the rules on the books - if they no longer apply, take them off the books.

I agree with some of the post above “don’t be selective”, I have had a violation of “Beware of Dog” sign which I promptly removed. My wife has had two violations, one for the Ashburn Youth Football League (AYFL) sign in the front yard a week before registration and another for AYFL Cheerleading signups on the side yard. So why are these people either not receiving the violations letters like we did or not complying?

And yes I live in Broadlands, don’t like the TERPS, and think the signs look trashy if they are up for extended periods of time.

The HOA is enforcing violations equally, letters have been sent and the process is proceeding as required by our governing documents.

Hey, at least the grass is growing (it is the rainy season, no?). Just wait until August when everything is dried up. We typically leave 2.5-3.0 inches of grass between mowings for the general health of the grass so when it rains through a weekend and we postpone mowing for one week you'd swear we haven't mowed all spring.

I think the HOA does a GREAT job! Thank you.
They tirelessly work hard to keep our a very desirable place to live. Thankfully, most homeowners take responsibility for obvious things BEFORE any need for a letter from the HOA...

-If your grass has not been mowed in over a week - mow it!
-If your shrubs are so big they are blocking your windows - trim them!
-If you have trees hanging over the sidewalks - trim them too!
-If there is no way in *$!@ you'd be able to fit even one car into your 2 car garage - clean it!
-If mold is overtaking your porch or siding - clean it too!
-If your deck is a dilapidated mess in need of attention - repair it, stain it!
-If your mailbox is being held on by a bungee cord and the paint is all chipped away from the post - it's a pretty easy fix.
-And if you've never bought a bag of mulch in your life - now is the time!

vdb...if you are not an HOA volunteer then perhaps they should recruit you as you seem to know what you and everyone else's property should look like.

-If someone's grass has not been mowed in one week perhaps it's because it doesn't need cutting. If you're suggesting it needs cutting to look neat and trim and not due to being overgrown or weedy, then you're suggestion is unreasonable.

-If someone's shrubs are partially covering their windows did it ever occur to you they may want tall shrubs to help keep the summer heat out?

-And if you've never bought a bag of mulch...:shakehead:

As long as someone is abiding by the covenants who are you to dictate a preference or style.

I think VDB's point was that if you take reasonable care of your property, then there won't be any issues with the HOA.
I have yet to see a yard violation notice that wasn't well deserved. If you get one and don't think it's deserved, call me up and i will come out and take a look.
Just don't cut it before I get there as someone did before (they weren't aware that we took pictures of it's "before" condition!)

Thanks for the note and article KT. I realize those examples may have been generalizing/exaggerating? Sorry if offensive. I honestly was really just trying to say I am pleased we have an HOA and think they do a fine job in maintaining that we all are able to live in a great community. (We've lived other places without HOAs and the 'anything goes' got a little out of hand at times. Knowing there was an HOA was one of the attractive features that brought us to purchase in Broadlands). I agree that as long as residents take reasonable care of their property abiding by the neighborhood requirements, I'm on board and ideally there should be no need for HOA intervention. Thanks again.

I feel all HOA rules and regulations should be followed by everyone in the community. The particular house you're speaking of had a painted red mailpost several years ago and had to repaint it; I thought mailbox coverings were not allowed but as I walk throughout the neighborhood I've noticed several folks are doing it so evidently it's okay now. As for the signage/lights on the fence if they're allowed to do it (even if it is their fence) then I think everyone should be allowed but I think a can of worms will open.

Is there a way to put some kind of sign on the fence telling people there's a dog on the property? Not really one of those bright "beware of dog sign", but more of a, "Expect a dog on the property", "Please make sure you close the gate if you open, so my dog doesn't run out into the road sign", (for utility, landscape, etc...people)

I was so pleased to see the signs and light board taken down. Although, I did notice they still had the electric cord and a string of lights running in the trees on the common area adjacent to their yard. Should have suspected - the light board is back! They have been notified that it violates the HOA rules and apparently have quite a fine against them already. I don’t understand why someone would continue to do this…

I have to say, I have always been surprised when I see their signs. Never bothered to look it up, but it seemed to me that it was probably a violation. Doesn't really bother me, just seemed odd that in a community where there are folks who are quite particular about way less obvious things (the width between pickets in a fence was mentioned), someone would have complained about this sooner.
It also looks like common area fencing, although I see from this thread that it is in fact their private property now.

Would you believe... it's back. I guess I just don't understand their point. It's a violation - they know this because it has been removed at times.
