No, there is a new private security service that makes rounds in the neighborhood in late model Crown Victoria cars. I believe they're called New Horizon.

Who are these guys beholden to? Broadlands HOA? I would be surprised since I thought we didn't pay for that in our HOA fees?

Oh, I knew that already but I was merely asking whether if Broadlands HOA actually pays for that service for the neighborhood?

Very interesting! I guess they are just patrolling the common areas and HOA property only. That's a good thing to have!

    Get Trained

    Get Equipped

    Get Informed

From my little perch here on Ridgeway I can see the security patrol. They pass by 2 - 3 time a day. I will not describe the vehicle, but it's easy to pick out. I also see the LCSD pass by at least four times aday. In Southern Walk I know of two cops who bring their patrol cars home and at least one motorcycle officer. There are also several other "black" vehicles I've spotted on my walks. So, it IS only a matter of time before these creeps pick the wrong house.

Regarding the security patrols - everyone seems to have this idea that it's the job of the HOA to protect you & your property - guess what, it's not. Recent court cases nation wide have also ruled that the Law Enforcement Officers are under no legal duty to protect "you." It is their duty to preserve the peace in general.

Keep your lights on, keep your ears open, use your garages for cars and stay vigilant. a Neighborhood Watch does not mean folks patrolling the area on foot - it means folks keeping their ears & eyes peeled and reporting whet they see.

Letting your pup out in the back yard? Sweep the area with a flash light! Driving home at night? Do the speed limit and look at everything! Turn off the whole house fan at night and listen to your house.

OP: Thanks for the head's up.

KaosDad...Thanks SO much for your posting. Appreciate that.

Also, do the Courts mean that police officers today across the country can NO longer protect citizens? THought they were supposed to Protect and Serve? No? They can preserve the peace meaning keep the noise down and keep people orderly? But what about saving people's lives or defending people from harm? Didn't know about those court cases recently changing that.

By the way, I knew already that its not the duty of HOAs to protect us and our property....

    Thanks again!

The police are supposed to stop those committing the crimes - not be your babysitter - that's what he's talking about. People that are their own worst enemies... the police aren't there to save you from yourself.

kaosdad stated " Recent court cases nation wide have also ruled that the Law Enforcement Officers are under no legal duty to protect "you." It is their duty to preserve the peace in general."

I interpret that as cops are NOT under any legal duty to "protect" me...meaning that they don't have to be held legally liable if something happens to me by a criminal... They just have to ensure that the "peace" is preserved...But what do the courts consider "peace" to be?

    Just wonderin' aloud.

I think he's just saying that foot patrols alone isn't the answer...The entire community needs to be involved and that means LOOKING out for yourself AND others. We just cannot shove the responsibility on the patrols alone to do the job. It involves MORE than that.

    Right??

There IS STILL a NW program. PLEASE STOP telling people there is NOT. There is just very very very minimal participation. BUT NW is NOT street patrols like it was in the 80's. It IS people calling in things that they see that is out of PLACE. Calling me or the HOA does nothing. PEOPLE need to start "BOTHERING" the police. They are the only ones that have the authority to do anything.

Staci- I didn't realize it was still there. My apologies. I assumed that it had died off since I *THINK* read somewhere that there wasn't much interest. Please know that this is isn't intentional, ok?

I don't call the HOA about this stuff...I always make a point to call the sheriff's office if there is anything happening that they need to know about. S

right. but here's the deal- THAT will never happen. a few always take care of the many- from volunteering for community events to even JOINING the neighborhood watch (which we were on when it was active.) if you think you can get even 1/10 of the community to be involved in self protection, self awareness- :pofl::pofl:

so those of us who WILL get involved will bear the brunt of being vigilant for those who are too busy, too apathetic, too unconcerned (unless THEY are victimized), too full of excuses to take some time to contribute to the community.

LCSO does not allow it any more - puts residents at too great a risk and opens them up to breaking the law themselves by becoming more of a vigilante. They found out that about 80% of the time when a resident caught someone they were not able to prosecute and the crimes became escalated and retaliatory.

Staci-found your original posting on the other forum thread and here it is below...My apologies...thought that beause of Zero participation that it just simply "died out" from lack of participation. Mea Culpa!! You have the authority to whip me 99 times with a WET NOODLE!!! Sorry about that.

" We have a Neighborhood watch program - but it has ZERO participation (besides the email list). Even had a national night out Aug 3rd and NO ONE showed up. I had been hosting quarterly meetings with the LCSO and my big meeting had 5 people show up - the last few meetings the only people in attendance was me and VaCliff. One thing I need to get residents to understand is NW is not about having groups of residents patrolling it is about everyone paying attention to their surroundings and their children and reporting things that do not seem normal. No matter how small they may seem. The more reports the more deputies here the less likely of vandalism etc. I am trying to schedule 1 more NW meeting this year yet, but if I get no participation except the few times a year something happens to 1 family it is just too much work for me to keep running.

Wow...i had no idea...so what do we do then? Sit in our homes and twiddle our thumbs? Back in the day, we had people DRIVE around in the car with walkie talkies to the base who then would call the cops if the driver/passenger saw anything amiss. That still allowable??? OR has that changed?
