I just sent off a long email to Kate. I think everyone complaining should do the same.

Maybe someone should just direct GCF to this thread?

Yeah, I don't think we'll do it again. My son enjoyed the U-pick the few times we did it, and it's nice to be able to go to the farm without paying, but we don't really go out there enough to make it worth it. We eat the fruit, but I rarely get a chance to use up the veggies before they go off. The worms on the corn grossed me out a little, and I did come home to find that a worm had eaten probably 1/4 of the one tomato that was in my box. I do appreciate that they don't use a lot of pesticides, though.

We pick up from American Flatbread, and man, is that a pain! They told us that we can only come between like 4 and 6, and that just doesn't work with our schedule. Plus, I usually have to stand at the back door and bang for a few minutes before anyone comes to help me. That's not GCF's fault, but it hasn't made for a pleasant CSA experience.

When/where is the Belmont Ridge guy?

i agree and am really pretty bummed.

i'm thinking of seeing if another farm wants to do it next year as i really like the idea and would like to participate in a csa if at all possible. i'm going to email beth as well since i was the person who originally contacted them about doing it and have been disappointed that between the debacle of pick ups/delivery in the beginning to having to pitch so much of the box its not worth it.

as far as pick up problems at american flatbread- they supposedly have someone there early so you could pick up anytime... janice has been super accommodating so i'm surprised to hear that someone gave you a time window and was not available.

i thought that perhaps it was just our box that was icky as there have been many weeks when we didn't pick up until friday or saturday (we had another baby this summer and some days i barely know what day it is, haha)

I just wanted to say that I may not do this again next year, but not because I've been unhappy with the quality or quantity of veggies I've gotten. I grew up with a garden, so I know that not all the veggies are going to look like they came from the produce aisle of the grocery, but they'll still be ok to eat :) Also, we've had an extremely hot, dry summer...

I also haven't had any issues with American Flatbread, I generally go around 4:30 to the front door and as soon as they see the bin I'm holding, they know why I'm there :)

It's just that I'm pretty much the only one in my family that eats veggies of any kind, much less some of the more adventurous options we've gotten (I've never even seen a patty pan squash before!) I'm going to start canning, but it's been impossible for me to use all the produce I've gotten this year :) My composter has gotten a workout this year!

thanks for sharing this info- this demonstrates 2 reasons that this type of program doesn't work for me. 1- locked into what they provide, and if it stinks, then too bad. and 2- waste. we never know what we will want for dinner, so i only shop 2 or 3 days in advance. i like the freedom of the different farmers markets and the flexibility to buy as much or little as i need, while still supporting local farmers.
    :)
