I just received an email from the Dulles Greenway VIP Miles Program with the subject line "Special Offer for VIP Members". The email has nothing to do with the VIP Miles program and is simply a large ad for Landsdowne Resort. Nothing special or specific for VIP Miles members, just an ad with things going on at the resort in October.

So, now not only does the Greenway management/owners rake us through the coals with overpriced tolls and yearly price increases, they're now selling my email address to any business that would like to advertise to me as a Greenway user.

A quick glance at their Terms and Conditions (http://www.dullesgreenway.com/overview_of_the_vip_program.shtml) doesn't show ANYTHING about them being allowed to share and/or sell my email address to a 3rd party, or use it for marketing purposes, etc.

I've emailed the Abuse department of the provider they are using for their mass mailings (http://www.verticalresponse.com/) to file an official complaint about the Greenway's use of my email address.

Has anyone else been affected by this? Has the Greenway management used/sold/shared your information with 3rd parties without your consent?

    Here's the apology e-mail I received:

    Dear VIP Members,
We would like to apologize for the email you received from the Dulles Greenway VIP Miles Program. This year Lansdowne Resort was a Gold Sponsor of our annual Drive for Charity. To thank them for their support we agreed to pass along information regarding upcoming activities at the resort. This did not entail the sharing of personal information, or any information which is on file for our VIP Miles Program.
It has come to our attention that some people are concerned that we may be selling their email addresses. We are not. We derived no revenue from yesterday’s mailing and we do not sell your email addresses or share them with any third parties.
Please be assured that confidential information is secure and was neither provided to Lansdowne Resort nor any other company. We will no longer forward information from outside companies to our VIP Miles members and do apologize for the inconvenience.

    Dulles Greenway

I filed a formal complaint with the mass mailing service they used and they indicated that if what I described was accurate, it was against their terms of service and they would launch a full investigation. Looks like the Greenway got caught...
