Sometime last night, my husband's car, that was parked in the driveway, was rifled through. It looks like they were just looking for quick items to steal...luckily he has nothing of value in the car (except the car itself). And before anyone asks, no it wasn't locked. He ALWAYS locks his car, but for some reason, last night he forgot.

It's a good thing he was asleep...someone could have been hurt.

So it might be good for everyone to keep their eyes and ears open and keep their car doors locked!

The same thing happened to my husband's truck Wednesday night/Thursday morning. There was nothing in the truck, but the glove box was open and so was a small side compartment. Everything in the center console was put in the front seat.

The truck is usually locked, but wasn't this time. Hubby has also re-armed his alarm for the first time in 2 years.

That's exactly what happened....everything in the middle console was on the front set.

That's exactly what happened....everything in the middle console was on the front seat. If this is kids, where are the parents? I'm pretty sure that there's a midnight curfew for kids under 18. Maybe the Sheriffs Office needs to spend more time patrolling Broadlands to try to catch these guys.

I know it's easy to blame 'the kids', but often times the local teens are NOT the ones doing this. There are people out there who do this for a living. Times are tough, and they know what neighborhoods to go to. Could be that nice guy walking his dog late at night.

Trash nights are also prime nights for these criminals to come out. They know that people often forget to shut their garage doors. That's another reason to keep the door between your home and garage locked.

You could very well be right. I guess I thought if it were an adult, they'd at least try to steal the car as well.

This is organized, it's not kids happening upon a crime of opportunity. It's lucrative for these thieves and that's why they keep doing it. That's what I think.

Then I assume you filed a police report with the LCSO right?

You would be amazed by the number of people who have their car rifled through and when they come out in the morning, notice what happened but that nothing is missing, and simply go on with their day never letting the LCSO know what occurred.

I've even heard of some folks who call the HOA and complain and when asked if they filed a police report, they say "Oh, I didn't think it was that important and don't want to bother them. Can't the HOA do something instead?" :conf2:

I didn't think the police would care since nothing was stolen. Now that I know better, I'll call.

I was just giving people a heads up. I wasn't asking the HOA to DO anything.

I wasn't saying you were asking for the HOA to do anything. You stated in one of your posts:

"Maybe the Sheriffs Office needs to spend more time patrolling Broadlands to try to catch these guys."

If you don't file a police report or at least let them know through their non-emergency number, how do you expect them to justify increased patrols in Broadlands?

Residents need to understand that the LCSO depends on calls to determine the current 'hot spots' and concentrate on those areas. They don't 'magically' know where the crimes will occur or have occurred without someone letting them know. And expecting increased patrols when they have no complaints about an uptick in crime in an area isn't reasonable...

I just checked the LCSO daily crime report logs and the only report they have for our area since Oct 11th is the following:

    10/11/10
    1510 hrs.
    43100 block
    Broadlands Center Plaza
    Ashburn
Larceny: Unknown subject(s) removed a purse from an unlocked vehicle.
    C2010-016235

If ANYONE else had their car rifled through or has been a victim of any potential crime, please let the LCSO know by calling their non-emergency number. They'll let you know if a report needs to be filed, but at least they will have it in their logs that there's an increase in crime activity happening in a certain area and will dedicate resources to counter it. Otherwise, crimes of opportunity, such as this one, will continue to occur...

    {off my soapbox}

Police were called and an incident report was filed. Since nothing was stolen, a full report wasn't done. So at least they know. The officer that came by the house was very nice.

It is good to mention it though. I always look through the footage from my surveillance system. Did not see anything the last 2 nights, and we have one camera right on Kim's car.

Right now I am in the process of converting over my analog system (Lorex) to use video analytics (Axis megapixel day-night cameras). There is a free program that will identify people vs. objects and send emails w/ pics (vitamindinc.com). I learned of it on these forums. It also creates a highlights list, this is much better than fastforwarding thru hours of video. Even the basic Axis camera I started out playing around with blew away my Lorex system.

I liked "Vitamin d" so much I bought the version that does higher resolution for $50. Right now it sends my cell phone a picture when a package arrives. One of the selling points for me was super responsive tech support when I was still just using the free eval version.

I heard on WMAL this morning that there is a town outside of Philly that is going to enact legislation that will make it a 25$ fine if peoples cars are left unlocked at night. The first offense they will lock your car and send you a warning. Beyond that I assume they lock your car and send you a fine.

and I always wondered about that scenario... if someone is found going through your car, that is parked on your driveway... is it within your rights to pull a gun on someone and demand them to stop? And if they attempt to run away... not towards you, can you shoot?

I get worried that a situation like this can get out of hand, especially if it is late at night and people get surprised... and if the homeowner is not necessarily trained with a firearm etc.

Depends on the state. In some states, you can only shoot if your life is threatened. In Indiana, you can shoot them if they look at you crosseyed.

no- you can't use deadly force in VA for something like that- self defense only. from what i understtod last time i spoke to the deputy, even if a guy broke into my house and was coming up my stairs at me, if pulled my gun on him, then he turned around and went back down the stairs, THEN i fired, I could be in trouble. but i'd take that chance. B & E ME and take a bullet- the end.
