We need to board our dog while we are away for Thanksgiving. I was thinking of using a board and train camp, but am wary of dropping her off somewhere without a sound recommendation. Can anyone recommend one of these "doggie boot camps"?

Alternatively, does anyone know a dog trainer who would like to make some extra cash?

This is the first time we've left her and I want to make sure she is in good hands.

    Thanks to all.

Is your dog under 25 pounds... If so, I know a great place that does boarding.

I don't know the exact weight, but I think it's more like 25-30 pounds. Thank you, though.

I ask because I board my dog at this amazing dog resort, Top Dog Resort. The specialize in smaller breeds. It is kind of a drive but well worth it. They will even pickup your dog and return them for an extra fee. The reason I love this place is because it is 100% cage free. The dogs play outside and have access to the house. Don and Linda will love your dog as much as you do. My dog LOVES this place. Check it out: http://topdogresort.com/

You do have to go there prior to boarding to make sure the resort is a good match for your dog.

Wow. That place looks great. Sandy is bigger than all the dogs featured on the website, but I will pass along the info to my friend who is looking for a place for her Maltese - looks perfect for them. Thanks again!

My dogs are booked into Ivandale farms for Christmas based on recommendations here (might have been you jw25413 - I thank you!). We visited and it's beautiful, wouldn't mind a B&B weekend there myself! Bit pricey, but well worth it and no a la carte pricing shenanigans.

We recently had our 2 chocolate labs in a one week boot camp at The Animals House in Sterling. They did an amazing job with dogs that have very different personalities. The older dog was nervous, panted a lot and the younger one was excitable and used to get crazy around other dogs and strangers. They are like new dogs. The older is now calm and secure and the younger one easily follows commands in excitable situations.

As part of the boot camp we also have access to their group sessions for free to continue to reinforce their positive behaviors. If you call, ask for Cathy. She is an amazing trainer.

Can I ask you what it cost for the 3 dogs at Animal house? Our dogs are 13 months and 20 months. the older one is a female and almost since the male came in she has felt shafted. She listened well to me, came when i said come and flipped my hand toward me. she would sit and chew her bully stick next to my feet when I sat down. Now none of that happens at all. Boy comes up to me when he wants me to hold him. When she figures she will come to me her head is down and she almost crawls to me, then stops far enough away, that I have to bend to get her. Then 3/4 of the time she shivers while I hold her.

The other issue we have is that we have two cats. If I tell them no, or off, or whatever, the dogs - especailly her- think we mean them. So we have to get this fixed as well as straining at the leash.

Brassy, we had them there for full week and it was about $500 for the first dog and it was half price for the second. They worked with them a lot and the price also includes the overnight boarding. We scheduled it during a vacation when we would have been paying for boarding anyway so it worked out beautifully.

In addition to training the dogs they also take time to "train the owners" on being consistent with their behaviors so they don't revert back to old habits. In the 8 days that they've been back I only see minor hints of the old behavior (young dog excited, older dog nervous) and all it takes is a few basic commands to get them back in check. I'm looking forward to continuing the classes (free) and further developing our skills. Overall though, we're all much happier and I'm happy I made the investment.

After a lot of searching, our dog is going to Aberdeen Acres just outside Winchester. They seem great on the phone and we are doing a tour tomorrow. I'll post an update after we pick her up in a couple of weeks.
Thanks to everyone for your recommendations! I appreciate your taking the time to help us out.
