It's been a year since we used Jose Melgar, but he did a great job for us. A co-worker used him to paint the interior her house in the fall and was pleased. His number is 703-585-8243.

We are getting some interior painting done and have gotten a quote from someone who does a lot of other work for us (finished our basement, added a sunroom, etc) so we would like to use him, but I really have no idea how his quote compares to professional painters.

Here is what we are having done:
    - wallpaper removed from dining room and then painted
    - Kitchen, family room, foyer and upper and lower hallways repainted and drywall touched up as needed and doors painted.

No ceilings or upper crown molding will be painted.

Our quote is $4,700, which he may bring down a little because of some other work he may be doing for us.

Can anyone give an opinion on how competitive this price is? Like I said, because we have a great relationship with him and have liked the other work he has done, we would be willing to pay a slight premium, but not something outrageous.

    Thanks

It's hard to tell if the price is competitive unless you get other quotes. Removing wallpaper is time consuming. Good luck.

I think it is way too much. I was priced for whole Town house painting by 5 different people who quoted $3000-$3500 including paints. Later I did not do it but recently I did contact back with one of them and offered $2500 for the complete job. Next week they will start the work. I will update if they are really good.

I would negotiate lower especially if you have to purchase the paint. They may agree to it since you've given them a number of projects. Sometimes it's more practical to stay with the contractor who you trust and has done a good job.

Wow, that's a lot of $$$. Its been my experience that businesses that are dedicated to painting are much much cheaper than a contractor, remodeler, etc. I've had contractors (bathroom remodel, basement, etc.) basically tell me to not use them to paint for this very fact -- they make more money doing the "hardware" so they will charge you hardware prices for a painting job that takes time but not as much effort. Solicit bids from dedicated painting places and you should drop the costs significantly.

I always recommend Ronald Jimenez. He is wonderful and always the most reasonably priced. He just finished doing several small jobs at my home last week, but I have used him many times before for interior and exterior painting.
