Ok....so we are thinking about having our ducts cleaned....and I am guessing this will end up being like Carpet Cleaning...where advertised cost and service quality varies greatly.....

So can anybody share with me their experience / knowledge.... if you had this done who did you use? What did it cost?

is this really something to do..sad as this might sound I can never remember my parents ever doing this....but then again I also remember a light dinner being mayo packed tunafish on a huge NY bagel.....

Interest here too! I hear of too many scams so the task has been delayed. I think there were earlier threads discussing this topic where someone mentioned blowing out their dryer vent using their vacuum. At a minimum I'd like to clean the vent.

I had Dryer Vent Wizards come out last year to inspect, and luckily our vents did not need cleaning.Made me feel like they weren't scam artists.

I have Pure Air Service coming out next week. www.pureairservice.com. They came recommended from a friend. There is just way too much dust and we always have the air or heater running. The quote for a SFH is $448. I know it's probably more than others, but they were also voted number 1 for Loudoun County best pick for air ducts. Good Luck!

Oh yea--I'm sorry I forgot to repost my impressions. I am VERY pleased. No hidden charges at all. They vacuumed out every register vent I had and then closed each one while they sucked out all the excess from the main thermostat. He showed me the before and after too. The downstairs had more dust and junk that the upstairs but it's all clear and clean now. He also changed both filters (not a big deal, but great none the less). I can tell that the amount of dust has greatly decreased. I had the AC on week and really can tell the difference in performance and dust. The only complain is more about my painter than the Air Duct guy, when my painter painted our big register (the square receiving one on the wall) he didn't remove the vent first her just painted over it. So when Air Duct came out they needed a box cutter to get the plate off to clean the vent. So now we have some touch up painting to do. No Biggie. Overall, I think this is one of those household services that you get what you pay for. $448 and they recommend I'm good for 3 years, so roughly $130/year maintenance is great for cleaner air, especially during allergy season. A+ for service. Good luck!

Based on your comments here, mwork, I called Pure Air Service and received the same quote for a SFH ($448). Our appointment is next Thursday.

There's a new deal on Groupon from EnviroCare. I've never used them but it sounds like a bargain.

$59 for an air-duct-cleaning package with dryer-vent or carpet cleaning (a $228 total value)
    • Air-duct cleaning for one system, including unlimited vents and one return (a $159 value)
    • Carpet steam cleaning for three rooms or dryer-vent cleaning (a $69 value)

A year ago I had Potomac Services clean our ducts. I was somewhat surprised that they didn't take the registers off the ceiling vents and instead blew compressed air in using a 3 ft long whip tube. Did your vendor take off the vent registers? They said it would mess up the paint, which I can believe...

Based on HOA forum recommendations for a company to clean dryer vents, we hired Duct Doctor USA to come to our house and clean all the ducts. We have a large SFH, 5 BR, 3 BA. Cost was $445 for service, plus $75 for "green clean" disinfectant treatment. My wife was home the whole time and said they did a fine job and left no mess. They techs called me 35 minutes before the scheduled appointment to confirm their on-time arrival. They were friendly while they were here - loved our dog. They had to cut into two of the main ducts in the basement to access the vent shafts, but sealed everything up after. After they finished, the techs told my wife our house ducts looked as if they had never been cleaned before - apparently they were VERY dirty. The house was built in 1997, so we had 17+ years of dust buildup if they were right (we moved in in 2008, so we have no way of knowing if the cleaning had been done before). So, I guess the bottom line is we are happy with them and glad we got it done just as winter is starting.
