Our wood deck is about 6 years old, and it is looking pretty bad. I was interested in putting down a indoor/outdoor rug on the deck but wanted to get some feed backs.. Did some research online but the information is just all over the place.. Has anyone used indoor/outdoor rug on your wood deck? - I'm not interested in the "installed" kind, but rather, the area rugs labled "indoor/outdoor" that you can easily find at home depot or bed bath & beyond (so our little ones and dogs can play on it without worring about getting splinters). Thanks !

I have one I bought at Costco. I used to have it in the basement but the cat kept peeing on it so I put it outside to let several rainstorms wash it out. I haven't brought it back inside and it seems fine. Just be sure to weight it on the corners or sides so the wind doesn't whip it away.

Villager - is yours one of the ones that seems to be like thin carpet? How long does it take to dry out after rain. Looked at these over the weekend, but concerned it would stay wet long after rain.

Wouldn't a 'rug' like this cause moisture to remain under the rug and cause the underlying wood of the deck to 'rot' more quickly or gather mold, mildew, etc?

we had an outdoor rug for about 3 years, when we took it up the area it covered was darker than the rest of the porch and this is screened. We had it all stained, so you can no longer see it. We took it up as the pets were chewing it up.

What about a mat that's made from plastic tubing weave? I know of them as RV mats, but they might be called patio mats. They dry very quickly and can easily be swept clean. They can also be folded up for transport (say a picnic or the beach) and they come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Probably. I don't plan to leave it out there permanently. But I would think that would be true of any surface, not just wood, so maybe they are made to repel mold and mildew? I don't know but will Google it because that's how I roll. :)

That's the kind. I don't know how long it takes to dry, sorry.

Edited to say that from what I read online, most indoor/outdoor carpets are made to be mold and mildew resistant. One website said that if the rug is in an uncovered area then you should expect to have it last for one season, maybe two. For around $29 at Costco you could give it a shot but maybe check the flooring underneath periodically to make sure it's doing okay.

If you tend to go out on the deck barefoot... you need to be careful of the type of rug/carpet you choose. If it has a black backing, it can get pretty hot in the summer.

We have one on our deck and it works quite nicely. It's heavy enough that it doesn't blow away (I'm sure this is by design) and I haven't seen any mildew around it at all... and we do have some mildew around potted plants on the deck so I know the deck is capable of growing the stuff. We got it originally to help avoid splinters. I can't remember where we got it, though. Chances are it was Home Depot ot Lowes.
