our first zone thermostat is out. There is no light,, what could be the problem? it's just a standard builder grade thermostat. I've tried to turn off and on the furnace also tried the same thing with the furnace power switch in the electrical box.. it didn't help. Is there anything else I can do before calling for an electrician?

i took the unit off the wall but there is no place for a battery.. i'm assuming this "builder grade" doesn't have the battery capability? it's non programable digital thermostate by honeywell.

If all else fails, replacing the thermostat with a programmable one might be cheaper than paying an electrician to look at and fix it. They aren't too hard to install.

I have "builder grade" digital unit in my house and it does require a battery. You don't have to take it off the wall.

The front cover can be removed to replace the battery.

It may require a battery as the backup source of power... but I would still bet that it is connected to the home power with a hot connection to the thermostat. If you remove the cover... look for other screws that hold the cover on the wall and remove them. I bet you find 2 wires from the wall.

And I would seriously consider replacing that unit with a simple programmable thermostat. It is really easy to install if you have any skills with a screw driver and can follow instructions. Just make sure you turn off the electricity at the breaker before messing with the wires.
