Not sure if anybody responded but there are 2 costcos around (one in sterling and one in leesburg) - both within 15 minutes, and 2 wegmans (really is an enjoyable shopping experience) again one in leesburg and one in sterling both within 10 minutes and totally worth the trip

Our typical shopping is to buy bulk things (tp, juice boxes, etc) at Costco, a lot of store brand, produce, meat, etc at Wegmans and last minute things for dinner the night of at HT. I agree with others that you can find amazing deals at HT, but you have to shop those right and ignore the things that aren't on sale. I don't have the time to shop HT the right way anymore. But what I did notice about a year ago was that the Thomas' bagels were $2.99 at W ($2.49 when on sale) and $3.99  at HT. Now we stock up when at W b/c we go through 1.5 bags/week. I will also shop at Giant if it's a handful of items and not a "run out and get it" thing.

I'll usually head up to Leesburg Costco & Target for shopping then hit Wegmans on the way home every other weekend. There's also a Costco over on rt 50 at 28 if you're ever in that direction.

    Happy shopping!

Thanks so much everyone! Went to Wegman's in Leesburg tonight. OMG - I think I am in love! But yes, gotta watch it there. I spent way more than I had intended, but I definitely saw the great prices. We bought the bagels there too! I also noticed how expensive bagels were at HT.

    Thanks again!

I mostly shop at Harris Teeter but I have the time to watch for sales and use coupons. I usually save 30-40% doing that, sometimes 50% and every so often even more. But I understand that's not an option for a lot of people.

I also love that Harris Teeter gives back to the local schools based on "linked" grocery store cards. Mill Run received $3500 from HT for the 2010-2011 school year. I wish Wegman's would offer a program like that.

HT is overpriced on most items. Sure, they have loss leaders that are marked down, but overall their prices are the highest around.

A couple of years ago a comparison was done of the local grocery stores and Wegman's won hands down. I go to Wegman's for everything except one thing they don't carry. Costco really isn't a great deal when you comparison shop. And, Giant just isn't the chain it was 15+ years ago.

As for what HT gives back to schools, etc. You can save the money you're spending by shopping elsewhere and just write the school's a check.

safeway's bagels are the best of the chain stores... chewy outside and nice and dough-y in the middle. the other stores are more like loaf bread *yuck*
