To the kids that knocked over all the mailboxes on Vestals Gap: I know you follow the forums and read with great anticipation hoping for an honorable mention the next day. Here it is. Little extra fun with this one though, I have cameras for just such an occasion. You guys were pretty careless. You had better hope the Sheriff's office can't find anything identifying. Have a good week.

I think the forum should install a "like" button for these such occasions!! :)

Mailboxes on Glebe View and Sturman Place were hit also and the Sheriff is out right now.

He just swung by. Apparently there were approximately 40 hit. At an estimated $150 each. That would bring us up to around $6000 in possible damages. These boys hit the big time. Virginia law 18.2-137 punishes vandalism as a Class 6 felony when the value of or damage to the property is $1,000 or higher. I imagine if anyone has been in trouble before we could be talking about jail time or juvi. Well played boys.

Your mailbox is Federal property. Tampering with mailboxes is a FEDERAL Crime. This means that violators can serve a prison sentence up to three years for EACH act of vandalism. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service notes that a fine of $250,000 can be levied.

So Virginia law doesn't apply here.

These boys are in way over their heads with this. It will be interesting to see what comes of it.

I wonder what the punishment would be for a juvie that has no arrest records or criminal history? Wonder what they have done to juvies in the recent past for similiar history? Slap on the wrist and perhaps some community service hours and restitution? Or have they ever had the book thrown at them by the judge?

Hope they catch the perpetrators in this one!

Are the images clear enough to identify? I'd love to see a picture- maybe someone will recognize the kids.

I posted about the same thing not too long ago (I am also on Vestals Gap). It's a shame that we have to resort to cameras in such a nice neighborhood. Hopefully, this will send a very strong message (especially if they are caught) to the vandals in the area.

Since there is a strong chance that the people involved were juveniles, please refrain from posting their pictures on these forums. You may send them directly to anyone you wish, without using this website as the exchange mechanism; that's your decision. Posting them here, and the risk that they be associated with names could get us into some possible trouble.

    Thanks for your understanding.

My husband called me on his way to work and told me about the mailboxes. Naturally I had to drive around to see the damage - unbelievable! I decided I might as well go to Wegmans since I was out. I got to the stop sign on Ellzey by the school and there was a long orange hose (possibly a fire hose) running across the street with an orange cone stuck in the end and some kind of heavy black cord hanging on a sign. This was about 7:15 and I immediately called the non-emergency LCS number and reported the mail boxes and the hose. I know from reading the forum that many people have property cameras....I hope someone got enough info to find out who would do these type of things.

Over the years I've noticed the nicer neighborhoods actually have the cameras, in part because it is a good preventative measure. Reducing property crime is one area that cameras are truly effective. Nor is a criminal going to the poorest neighborhood looking for a GPS to steal.

Get the sheriff the footage and they will post it on you tube if they are not able to identify using other means (school resource officer etc).

Wanted posters instead of yard sale signs.

What's a recommended home surveillance system?
