Though we moved from Broadlands to Nashville a couple years back, we miss it here. So we'd love to see old friends and new at 7 Free Parenting Workshops this week (Wednesday PM at the Loudoun County Admin Bldg).

We've added new content, including creating a stress-free evening routine and dealing with strong-willed kids (and spouses!). It's a lot of fun and very helpful. There's no need to register and all events are FREE. So bring a spouse, a friend, even your kids. Sample video and more info at the link:

    Here's one:

I've read the book "Your 7 Year Old: Life in a Minor Key" by Louise Bates Ames. It has helped me understand the cyclical nature of children aging, and how this just happens to be a year when everyone hates them, they can't do anything right, they're stupid, they wish they hadn't been born, everyone is out to get them, life is terrible. We experienced it with our older child who has now, thankfully, grown out of it and is happy again!

No amount of reassuring from myself or my husband seems to do any good with our younger child. He's still certain we hate him and wish he was dead. I realize that some of this is normal, natural and will eventually fade. But in the meantime, I'd love to hear some suggestions about how we should respond to him when he's saying things like this. Do we just say, "I love you. I'm sorry you feel like we don't, but we do" and wait until he gets over it?

Thanks! Looking forward to hearing lots of suggestions tonight for boys in the 7-9 year old range who are still learning how to control themselves! We've tried the "If you could control yourself then mom and dad wouldn't have to" with them, but they're still a little young to get it. :)

Interesting. Some kids use this language as a way to escape from pressure. If you don't like me or have high expectations of me, I can't fail. It's a defense mechanism. Some kids will resort to saying, "I'm stupid!" because they are frustrated at themselves--they just don't have the tools to control their emotions or impulses, get in trouble and then get mad at themselves. Some kids won't receive compliments. The more you praise them, the more they resist. Again, it's resisting the pressure that comes with high expectations. So we'll try to get into this.

Self-control is no different that learning multiplication tables, geography facts or karate. Practice and repetition. Kids need very specific, concrete steps to take every time they feel anxious, overwhelmed, frustrated, etc. We'll definitely cover that.

And as a bonus...how parents can control their emotions! That could take all night :)
