I am moving to the Broadlands in December and currently reviewing my options for broadband service. I am not eligible for OpenBand and VeroLAN is much to expensive for what i need. Does this mean my only option is Adelphia? If so, how is their service?

I checked with them and they do offer service to Frame Sq., which is where my home is. I am not looking for too much, just surfing, streaming, and possibly VPN to the office on snow days!

    TYIA!

    There another option, just pricier.

You can do direct TV's Direct Internet satellite service. However, if you're going to use Adelphia cable TV, its easier just to get a cable modem.

Adelphia has been 99.9% up lately, and I've not heard of any issues for a while. Adelphia does offer some good tie ins for their cable TV and Internet service.

I have not heard much of FIOS coming to the Broadlands, and I don't think you're going to see it available here anytime within the next year or so. I do know that currently Verizon is busy running new fiber in some of the neighboorhoods near Leesburg like River Creek and thereabouts.

The neighbors are all in a uproar as they didn't realize that the first 3 or 4 feet closest to the street is VDOT right of way, so here comes Verizon pulling fiber and tearing up all their sprinklers. I suspect much the same will be occurring here, as many homeowners not having a sidewalk on their side of the street installed sprinklers to the curb, even though its still VDOT right of way, and ( I seem to remember) has utility easements.

I will move to Broadlands next year, however where I live now the only option I have is Adelphia.

What can I say, it started kind on and off, but now it is amazingly good. They upgraded their regular service to 3000/256 of which I have an average of 2965/236 almost all the time. Pings are great too.

I can't really recommend satellite unless you are a casual user (strictly browsing/email/downloads). Satellite is the worst connection you can have for gaming or any other application where short latencies are essential.

    Hope that helps.

adelphia is the only way worth considering. DSL is cheaper, but not here yet. Sat = horrible.. even the installer will tell you so. VeroLAN = not the most consistant, but if you have some needs beyond what adelphia will do, I'm sure they would work with you (static IPs, etc). But honestly, for home use, adelphia has been about all you can ask for.

I have them just for internet (use Sat for TV)

Thanks for the input. I am pretty sure I am going to go with Satelite TV, but it is good to know that I can run cable for internet and that it is "not bad". That is all I really need.

You may want to reconsider that as the cost is cheaper for Adelphia, and they just added a new option for an extra $5 for faster upload/download speeds.

Don't do sat.. you'll just be coming back later. Sat really offers no advantages over cable modems where cable is available. Sat should only be used as an option where someone doesn't have DSL or Cable Modem.

Plus Sat has negatives.. possible weather fade.. higher latencies.. lower speeds typically. Most say its ok for web, useless for just about everything else, especially if you need upload for anything.

I get 350+k/s consistantly with Adelphia and good uploads now. Downtime is minimal these days, and I've only had 1 extended outage.

Anyone heard any new news on fios (http://www.verizon.net/fios)? I can't find any real link on verizon's site to get them feedback of how much people in Ashburn would probably want this. :(

Good luck ... half of Ashburn still can't get DSL, even with this being the high tech area of Northern Virginia. Verizon can't figure out who or what to serve, and you expect FIOS ??

I can dream. :D I've heard some rumblings in other places about Verizon running lines in the neighborhoods further out 7. And they've been doing a few fiber pulls on main roads in Ashburn, hopefully that wasn't just for OpenBand. :(
