I just received an e-mail from the county that said a traffic signal is still in the planning stages and it could be installed by next summer if all goes well. Thought I'd pass this along, rant and then wait for a response from Cliff, who has my vote for bringing common sense to the "braintrust" of this county.

It seems that this traffic signal will happen after the (very small) section of Waxpool east of Ashburn Village is widened. As I mentioned in my response to the county, widening of that very small section of road may prove difficult since conduit for fiber is being laid right next to the two-lane road. In fact, there will be fiber on both sides of Waxpool since the Latisys Data Center is in the building furthest from Golds Gym and keeps expanding its footprint and another data center will be building a massive complex in the adjacent field.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if there is another Smith Switch Road fiasco on Waxpool with "mislabeled" utilities thanks to this prolonged wait for widening the road as hundreds of stands of fiber are being laid.

And finally, will the widening of Waxpool mean that we finally get rid of those two feet in diameter concrete pipes that are sitting on the shoulder of Waxpool to the west of Ashburn Village just before Waxpool and Faulkner Parkway split? I'm really getting tired of looking at those eyesores, not to mention the concrete barriers around them.

It's already being widened next to where the new townhouses are being built.

I think they already got the utilities moved out of the way a year or two ago.

Cliff, if you want my vote, I need a little more feedback than this. The issue isn't about moving old utilities, it's about conduit for fiber being installed right now, right next to the two lane road that will need to be widened before any light goes in.

From the lack of responses, maybe all you Broadlandians enjoy sitting 20-deep at that stop sign ever day. As for me, I cut through the neighborhood between Shellhorn and Waxpool on the way to work and Red Rum Drive. Not the safest routes (kids waiting for the bus and industrial), but that's the county's fault for doing nothing.

In talking to Cliff I think there was some confusion on which part of the road you were talking about. Just so I am clear, we are talking about the east side of the intersection along Waxpool correct? (that was not Cliff's understanding) Cliff was responding in regards to Ashburn Village Blvd where the widening is almost finished.

If I am on the correct section - the actual intersection is currently built 4 lanes wide, the way it is striped and curbed makes it hard to see that. After you pass through the intersection the road will be widened with land from the north side (industrial side). Where they are putting in the conduit is along the west side by the residential homes. If they were to expand the road to the south they would literally be taking away personal property.
As far as the timing of that expansion - I need to get more information from the county, and can get back to you as soon as I have it.

I hope this better answers your question.

That same stretch has been dug up no less then 5-6 times (I wouldn't be surprised if it was really like 20 times!) to run more and more conduit. I presume that is the preferred right of way for MCI->WorldCom->Verizon due to them owning the property on that side or something similar. I can't imagine why they keep digging it up over and over and over. Just put in a tunnel already :)

I bet the regency has just given up on upkeep of the grounds in front of that entrance it's been dug up so often.

I agree. I would think that would be a less expensive option too.

Here's the response from the county and VDOT:

Chuck Acker reviewed the fiber plan in relation with the County project(
see below). However, I'll have my inspector verify the field to make
sure fiber is installed as per approved plans.

    Subject: Woodlawn SIDERA-DRT Segment 6 & 7

    Doug:

We have confirmed with our design engineer that Sidera-DRT Segments 6 &
7 do not interfere with Construction Plan and Profile 2006-0051 for
widening Waxpool Road. Sidera-DRT's Segment 6 plan had been modified to
clear any conflicts with the CPAP and Segment 7 would be in existing
conduit which was not be in conflict with the CPAP.

Reviving this thread to see if anyone knows the status of the light that is supposed to replace the 4 way stop.

While everyone is speaking about this topic....what is the county planning to do with Croson and Belmont Ridge? This location is the worst I've ever seen. People are sitting so many cars deep WAITING endlessly in the AIM to get out to go to work. Sometimes it takes 15-20 mins from the time you are waiting to the time you actually get out because Belmont Ridge is continuously full with cars going past.

Actually, it is getting more dangerous to take a left onto Belmont Ridge from Croson. As I recall, we have had an accident there already where a car got T-Bones and Belmont was closed thereafter.

So my question is...when is the COUNTY gonna get a STOPLIGHT there or at least at the intersection close to Briar Woods HS? How long MUST we wait?
