I am looking for a volunteer opportunity for my 4.5 year old son. I'd like him to have the sense of giving and appreciation during this holiday season. I can't seem to find such opportunities suited to his age but I definitely believe volunteering is never too early :) I'd greatly appreciate if some recommendations can be given by this community.

At the mall there usually is an Angel Tree where you can buy presents for a child whose parent is in prison. It's nice for a child to choose items for someone his/her own age who is in need.

If you're involved at a church, see if they have opportunities that sound right. Crossroads United Methodist Church has lots of different opportunities, and they usually have a schedule of Salvation Army bell-ringing times.

I know there are lots of other things a small child can do, but those are a couple off the top of my head.

I'm with Audrey, those are some great options. My experience has been that is is difficult enough to find volunteer opportunities for older children, much less a preschooler. There are just too many liabilities for these charities to accept help from young children. The best thing you could do is start something as a family. Your little one will learn from watching your giving heart.

When my children were young, we would go through their toys around Oct/Nov and choose some to donate (toys that were in good condition). This would help to clear out the toy box for the new stuff that they got from Santa. And it would be donated to a local shelter or goodwill.

The Womans shelter in Leesburg, those children have nothing, when they leave their homes they go with the clothes on their backs. I always give to a family there at Christmas.

I bet our overseas troops or child patients in local hospitals would love to get hand-drawn cards from your child! That's great that you want to start the spirit of giving early. :)
