I'd like to bring my iPhone on a cruise that will be outside the US part of the time. I've heard horror stories of people accruing thousands of dollars in charges without knowing it because their phone accessed the internet. Is "airplane mode" what I need to do? I know my phone is constantly going and looking for app upgrades, map locations, heck it even knows which Starbucks I'm in. Would appreciate some knowledgable help so I don't blow my Christmas budget on phone charges. Thx!

i think you need to... LEAVE THE SMART PHONE IN YOUR BAG and FORGET it til the cruise is over! I paid a $10 or so to use the internet two or three times in the cruise internet cafe, but was not able to use my phone on the ship or in port, except Key west.

You can turn off celluar data, or turn off celluar data and voice.

In iOS5, there is a setting in network to turn off cellular data roaming. AT&T also tells you to change your push/fetch notification setting to manual. The first setting alone would prevent you from using international data roaming, which is where most of the cost is. AT&T seems a bit paranoid in telling you to change the second setting, but it can't hurt.

If you want to turn off cellular voice as well. Just turn on airplane mode. You can turn wi-fi separately while in airplane mode if you need it.

I recommend turning voice off as well, because you don't want calls or texts coming in to charge you even without you taking the call.

Just put it in airplane mode, and enjoy the silence.
