Home Repair Has anyone added (or thought of adding) an exterior vent to the stove?

    Hi,

Every time we sautee something, the house smells like it for days. The interior vent attached to the microwave is useless. I wonder why Van Metre didn't vent the stove to the outside? We would like to add an exterior vent now but are concerned with the fact that we would have to drill through the side of the house. Has anyone else had this issue?

    Thanks,
    Laura:conf2:

mine does vent to the outside. its like anything else - you just have a cover on it outside.
the big issue i have is the cook top fan assembly takes up the entire cabinet below. and in the winter the air coming "in" is cold.

Don't even get me started on the idiot way the cooktop fan is piped to take up the entire cabinet. Best part... they did the model for ours much better... we should have complained!

When we lived in MD, our neighbor heard a bird in the wall behind the stove. She removed the cooktop exhaust so she could remove the bird, but discovered the builder never made the vent hole on the interior wall of the townhouse. As the neighbors heard about it, they too, checked and found no hole. Nice! :screwy:

We are in a Miller and Smith end unit town house. One of the first things I did when we moved in was vent the stove to the outside through the microwave. It was not too hard because the stove was on the outside wall of our home.

    Hi,
Our stove is on the outside wall. Could you please let me know how you vented the stove to the outside? Did you hire a contractor to drill through? What about the electrical portion?

I guess it could be worse ... friends of ours in Fairfax have a townhouse. There is no fan in the master bath, and the "code" said there didn't need to be because the bathroom had a window. Can you imagine having to open the window in 20-degree cold or 90-degree heat?

The microwave fan in over-the-hood microwaves can be adjusted to vent outside. Usually you need an adapter plate that comes with the new microwave. I had to special-order one from the microwave manufacturer. I has to cut an opening in the cabinet above the microwave and then another hole through the outside wall. I purchased most of the vent pieces from Home Depot, but I special ordered the exterior vent piece. There is no electrical work because the fan is part of the microwave.

This was easy work for me because I am pretty handy, but is always a little scary cutting a hole in the side of the house. Also, most of the cabinet above the microwave is occupied by my duct work.

You are welcome to come look at the unit if you are interested. Just let me know.
