We're taking our 3 years old to see the tree this evening and would like to make a trip of it. As a DC novice I have no idea what's around to do besides the tree. Any recommendations? Also, kid friendly places to eat would be great. Thanks!

Not much to see down there kid-wise and its cold to walk around. The museums are sorta right there, including the air and space with the Imax theatre, if it is running a night program. The Willard does a nice job decorating itself as well. Also, there is Lucky Strike bowling lanes wihich is kid friendly early in evening but not later when kids arent allowed.

Hard Rock restaurant is nearby and kid-friendly, but food is mediocre at best. Asia Nine is kid friendly enough and has best pad thai and fried rice I know of; considered one of best in DC. Then there is Clydes over at the Verizon center -- not walking distance but not too bad.

I'd go to Gaylord national resort instead if you asked me . . . its just a tree :)

Thanks! I didn't think there was too much else, but since the Rockefeller Center tree was always a yearly trip for me as a kid I thought I'd try and do something similar for mine. Oh well...

Hi Here are a few ideas based on our experience.
-Went down this week and started at the US Botanical Gardens which we enjoy this time of year. It is decorated very nice at the holidays and there are trains the kids enjoy seeing too. They even have music/concerts on certain nights of the week too. http://www.usbg.gov/
-Then walked across the street to see the Capitol Christmas tree.
-Then drove to Union Station for a quick dinner and to see the trains and decor there too. http://www.unionstationdc.com/
-Then drove to the White House area for the National Christmas tree and wandered there for a bit too. http://dc.about.com/od/hoildaysseasonalevents/a/ChristmasTree.htm
-After that stopped at Georgetown cupcake on the way home for a yummy treat to top off a great day! http://georgetowncupcake.com/

Got lucky and found excellent parking spots near all of these attractions this week. We (and the kids) enjoyed a nice day. Happy Holidays!
