YUCK - thank you for posting. I just threw out this product and now the mystery of why both of my dogs seems so sick after I gave them this treat has been solved.

It is interesting, I purchased duck jerky and duck/sweet potato jerky treats for our dog a few weeks ago and he has been acting a bit odd and eating grass for about that long. My husband was teasing me that it was because I bought him gourmet treats, but maybe there is more to it....

My experience with my two dogs, is if they are eating grass it's their attempt to make themselves purge what ever they ate prior. I hope your pooch is okay and I am so thankful for KTdid - post. I was wracking my brain trying to figure out what made my dogs sick.

    Re: Chicken Jerky UPDATE

More illnesses and deaths reported... http://vitals.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/28/9747728-chicken-jerky-treats-sicken-353-dogs-owners-report

FDA issued a "cautionary" warning: http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/CVMUpdates/ucm280586.htm

It appears the offending jerky "no brand" and "made in China" could be recalled and pulled from shelves until the issue is resolved. This is similar to the salmonella in dog food reported recently. The advice? Owner should wash their hands  And the dog....?

Thank you so much for posting this! I just threw out a package of chicken jerky made in China.

Last year around Thanksgiving, my dog became horribly sick. At the time, we thought he found something out in the yard to eat that was "previously alive" quite awhile earlier. In retrospect, though, he had eaten chicken or duck jerky around that time.

You're welcome Charlotte. The FDA knew about the jerky several years ago but could not difinitively ID the culprit, so they never recalled it. It makes one wonder how many dogs died before their press release. The same can be said for the infant formula recently recalled.

I hope your dog is okay.

we shop at Doggone Natural and our dogs food and treats are all made in the usa, and atually HEALTHIER than most of what WE eat! the ingredients are all natural- there are plenty of great choices.

it's funny how often i tell my son NOT to give my dog a piece of his food because it's not good for him- then proceed to tell The Boy to eat it all... hmmm. dog oner the year- maybe. mom of the year- nnnnot so much!

just tell him dogs have different nutritional needs than humanoids! Also, in the US, "All Natural" means nothing... yay.

So the Senator wants to call the FDA on the carpet...how about his colleagues that are looking to gut the administration with budget cuts.

I have been concerned about their ability to protect human food, much less pet food. As important as that is also.

Agreed. If the FDA cannot protect our food then it is up to the consumers to be educated and to know what we're putting in our children's and pet's mouthes.

GMO's are one example and the biggest threat to the safety of our food: http://www.saynotogmos.org/

    Say No to GMO's: http://www.saynotogmos.org/monsanto_1.htm

Sign up to Label It: http://justlabelit.org/just-label-it-so-we-know-when-its-gmo

FDA attempting to regulate nutritional supplements: http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2011/10/30/supplements-set-to-become-illegal-in-2012-under-fda/

    FDA Conflicts of Interest: http://www.smart-publications.com/articles/lies-and-deception-how-the-fda-does-not-protect-your-best-interests

While the world's population explodes, the need to produce food faster is even greater but its safety should not be compromised. And just because the label says it's all natural and/or organic does not mean it is safe. Be weary of labels/marketing that appeals to your emotions rather than your rational side. If the ingredients listed are confusing, you're probably better off leaving the food on the shelf. Send a message with your wallet; demand better.

While there have been many issues with foods from China, I am not sure that Chicken Jerky treats are the primary issue here ::

Nestle Purina and other companies have reiterated that the FDA hasn't found a contaminant in the treats, and have suggested owners are feeding the protein-rich treats "in excess of normal or recommended levels," according to Waggin' Train's website, where the company referred a reporter.

The complaints of Fanconi-like syndrome in dogs related to the jerky began back in 2007. The testing is on-going. At a minimum, I would withhold the treats until something more conclusive is found.

"Please, please, please - don't be tempted to purchase treats (or food for that matter) when you don't know the country of manufacture or the country of origin of ingredients. If you are in a store and you see someone buying jerky treats, please warn them that reports of sick and dying dogs are pouring into the FDA." Susan Thixton
