The other day while buying groceries, I had overheard that Harris Teeter @ Broadlands MarketPlace would be closing their store because of excessive high Rent from Van Metre, upon their new Grand Opening Harris Teeter Store located @ Moorefield opens in the springtime.

Just for the record, My family adores the people who work @ Harris Teeter.

Seriously doubt this is true. HT is considered the 'anchor' for Broadlands Marketplace and Van Metre seems to be a lot more accommodating in regards to rents than Saul. Just compare the number of vacant storefronts between the HT shopping plaza and the Safeway one...

Harris Teeter's strategy is to put as many of their stores in the area and 'corner' the market. The store at Marketplace is always full of shoppers, and this will only grow as development continues in the area.

The Broadlands Marketplace website shows HT as being their 'anchor' business. If HT would be closing in the 'spring' as the original poster suggests, Van Metre would be doing everything they can to start looking for a new business to take over the space. There has been no suggestion at all that this is happening.

Finally, I would take notice that this was posted by a user with no previous posts - it's their first posting. Personally, I believe that the whole story of 'overheard while buying groceries' is a bit far fetched... If it was general knowledge by employees, MANY more people would know about this. And if manager's were the only ones who knew, they wouldn't be chatting about it in the open, even less in front of a customer...

Personally (my opinion only), I think this poster has 'ulterior motives'. I'll leave it at that.

Also agree, this just doesn't make any sense. I imagine in 10 years, that area will be pretty densely populated with all the development for the Metro, plus the proximity of a potential GMU satellite campus. Why would HT want to move to away from that?

man, if one HT closed, we'd be down to like 5 more in a 5-mile radius! 8)

Not enough, especially if all the homes get built around that goose creek and Moorefield Station place. We'll probably need 10 more grocery stores.

I assure everyone that if there is any truth to that rumor, then Van Metre has absolutely no knowledge of it. And if it turns out to be true, then excessive rent definitely is not what is driving it.

I tend to agree with Mr. Linux . . .

I agree here ...and I'd be VERY shocked if they did indeed move, which I doubt will happen.
