    Hello All,

We have one of those lamp-posts that takes the candelabra(sp?) base bulbs - the kind that goes into the chandelier type fixtures. Does anyone have a recommendation of a bulb type and brand that would last more than a few weeks? I think the temperature fluctuations affect their lifespan, and I seem to be changing bulbs almost every other month.... what tricks do my smart neighbors have that they can share? :)

    Thanks!
    Sri

I use the Hallogen bulbs from Home Depot. They are more expensive but seem to hold up to weather (cold, hot, wind) better than a traditional bulb. I used to have a house that the wind was much worse and only took one bulb (bonus) - when I switched to the hallogen i stopped having to replace every month.

Bonus - they are much brighter too so they put out some good light!

I just got some LED ones from Costco -- they were maybe $16 for 3... good deal, and way less watts than CFL/Halogen/Incan

Lamposts have a maximum wattage. After my neighbor replaced his 100 watt with a 60 watt lamp post bulb, it lasted more than 3 months instead of 1 month. We use the CFL micro-mini and have not replaced it in two years. And it's instant on too...

Right now we have lights of america from costco. It is a whiter light, and while they work they only put out 135 lumens ea (at 2.5W of power ea). This brand is not considered a quality brand, EDN had some good articles and teardowns. Nevertheless they have been working fine for 1/2 year or so.

Just converted the lights on the side of the garage doors to CFL, 23W 1700 lumens (100 watt equivalent). I've seen the spiral type up to 2700 lumens, I think that was 36W. The 23W produce a nice amount of light. Previously it had two candelabra per fixture, they were always burning out and the sockets had gotten a little flaky. Plus it costs a lot to run these with 60W bulbs that is 240W just on the side of the garage doors. You can do this for about $8 in parts from Dominion in Sterling, if anyone is interested I can post pics. You can do this in under an hour.

I have an LED bulb on the side garage door 8W LG. Works good and a decent amount of light but nowhere near the CFL.

The LED bulbs hopefully will get more output in the years to come.

These are the ones we have had in our lamp post for the last 3 years and only use 3 watts. Expensive but for something that has to stay on all night and total watts is only 9 watts combined isn't bad.
