Patriot Disposal and the Broadlands Association are working together to keep the Broadlands beautiful and litter free while promoting recycling. Patriot is offering our residents a 64-gal lidded recycling toter at no cost! The toter takes up the same amount of floor space as the current recycling bin, but holds THREE times as much! Plus the lidded toter prevents recycling from being blow about the neighborhood on those windy Thursdays. The bright blue lids alert the driver and the collection staff that recyclables are ready for pickup; no more accidental mixing of trash and recyclable waste!

On Thursdays in May, Patriot will pick up the current recyclables collection bins and replace them with a lidded toter. If for any reason you do not wish to have a toter delivered, please contact Patriot at 1-703-257-7100, prior to April 26th and let them know you want to “opt-out” of the 64-gallon recycle toter program.

If you wish to be included, just put out your recycling bin and it will automatically be replaced with a toter sometime during the month of May. Please remember these toters are for recycles only, they cannot be used for trash.

Contact the HOA office at 703-729-9704 or Patriot Disposal with any questions.

Does this mean I will get a refund of the payment I made to Patriot last year to get a wheeled toter when I moved in?

I was wondering the same thing. I just paid for mine a couple of months ago.

So, I paid $25 for one last year as well.
Really not concerned if I get it back.

These recycling toters are great. We've been using them in Ashburn Farm for several years. I definitely recommend them. Big reduction in blown debris around the neighborhood.

    Maureen,

This is great news and thank you for the effort for getting the larger recycling totes pushed out to Broadlands. We too paid the $25 deposit to Patriot this past year and are curious if we would get a refund. Also, our smaller tote blew away during the last wind storm and was not able to be found. How could we receive a secondary larger tote without having the old smaller one?

Thanks again for all of your help.

OMG!!! I am SOOOO excited by this. I pick at least 3 pieces of trash out of my yard every week because of the recycling bins.

This is a double-edged sword. I'm glad the toters will be available however, the folks who never put their trash toter away will now have two toters sitting on the curb. :rolleyes3:

Ironically we live in the SW TH's and this isn't a big problem. But I'd still rather look at a Toter than pick up other people's trash! Some of it still has old moldy food, etc... on it. Yuck!

That's great that $25 isn't a big deal to you. But for some people, $25 is a lot. I'm not going to make a big issue out of it, though, I was just wondering.

    Ditto.

On the other hand, if Patriot charges the HOA more, and the HOA charges us all more, to provide "free" toters, keep the $25 and don't make me pay higher HOA fees.

I live in a TH section, too. There are a handful of residents who do take their time putting the can away, out of sight, if they do at all (some people leave them in their driveway by the garage door).

Please contact Patriot directly to discuss the fees that were previously paid for recycling toters. 1-703-257-7100

The toters were a part of the new contract negotiated with Patriot. As I'm sure you noticed, HOA fees 2012 assessments remained at the same level as 2011.

Do we need to use these? This is another thing that won't fit in the garage so it will have to be outside.

So very THANKFUL to the HOA and Patriot for this new perk. Looking forward to the new recycling toter being dropped off. And added bonus is this will help keep recycling off the streets on windy days. Woo-hoo!!!

Yes, lidded toters will be a great addition as I have on numerous occassions picked up bags full of recycleables on windy days. However, I do also agree with KTdid in that those who do not put away their current smaller recycle bin will now only store their larger one in their driveway. Storing trash cans and recycle bins in driveways in plain sight seems to be a common practice in the SW townhouse section. It definitely detracts from the neighborhood.
