My husband and my oldest son have something to do for a few days, leaving me and my 7 year old son alone for a few days. It JUST occurred to me (yes, I'm slow) that I could use this time to take my 7 year old somewhere fun... just the two of us. Here's our criteria:

It is next week, so flying is out. Must be drivable within 4 hours. The closer, the better, since it will be a quick trip.

We love Virginia Beach (and Sandbridge, especially). We love Rehobeth (and Bethany). Would consider those destinations as we've been there before, but are hoping to find something closer.

Will stay no more than 2 nights, must be less than $200 per night. I realize this may be impossible this time of year, but maybe we'll get lucky on a last minute deal?

I'm particularly interested in North Beach, MD, or Chesapeake, MD. We've never been there so I'm not sure how much of a "beach" there is. We don't need the boardwalk and all that stuff. Just a decent beach to hang at for a few hours, a good restaurant for dinner, and close enough to make a quick, last minute trip worth it!

I'd love your suggestions for a destination, lodging, restaurants, things to do, etc.

    Thank you!

Dutch Wonderland near Hershey PA is fun for that age and has a water slide as well as rides. There's a hotel walking distance called I think Country Inn that has a pool and pingpong table.

I haven't been to either of the beaches you mentioned, but for a beach you could try Cape May - going by ferry adds to the fun.

Take him to Hershey Park then hit the Turkey Hill Factory up by York, PA. Or the Dutch Wonderland thing sounds fun too... but who doesn't like chocolate and ice cream!!!!

Don't waste your time with North Beach, MD...we went there two years ago and it was a disappointment.

Have you thought about Wolf-Lodge & the Williamsburg area, you can also do tubing on the Yorktown river which is tons of fun. Another bonus is you could be at VA Beach in about 90 minutes.

Jamestown has a little sandy beach on the river next to a pirate ship, a good afternoon activity if you're staying around Williamsburg.

Chincoteague/Assateague Islands. . . wild beaches, a historic lighthouse, ponies, and other wildlife. Or head west to the mountains (Staunton or a bit farther to Meadow Lane Lodge http://www.meadowlanecottages.com/). About 4 hours either way.

Chincoteague sounds neat. Are there placed that, this time of year, you can just stay a night or two instead of renting an entire week?

There are a few hotels in town that permit stays of a couple of days (at least in my experience.) There are also a few campgrounds. Not sure of availability this time of year, though (I've only been early or late in the season.)

Deep Creek Lake? We have never been but it's on my list to do at some point. We have friends who have gone regularly. There's the Wisp Outdoor Adventure Park & also some parks/waterfalls/etc nearby.

Nemocolin Woods Resort in Farmington, PA. Lots to do - mini golf, on site zoo, arcade, indoor and outdoor pool, fossil hunting sand pit, kids camp, great spa. It's about 30 minutes from Falling Water if you are interested in Frank Lloyd Wright. Both of my boys really enjoyed seeing the house.

i second (or third) Chincoteague. Very quaint beach town! You can walk everywhere, stay in a hotel, rent bikes and ride down to the beach, nature walks, ice cream, diners. it is a nice if you don't want hustle and bustle of boardwalk style beaches, and/or the 6 hour drive to OBX.

We have also done Great Wolf Lodge and our kids had a blast there too. All indoors, so inclement weather (meaning 100+ temps, or rain) will not hinder the fun.
