I'm not a transportation engineer but cannot believe the layout of Waxpool and Pacific. How Wegman's and all those other business have not successfully lobbied to correct it is hard to understand.

The westbound (right) lane of Waxpool should be a right turn (exit) only lane onto Pacific northbound. Then Pacific southbound lane should have a dedicated merge lane onto Waxpool westbound.

The current arrangement probably costs 100's of hours of people's time every day. Its a no brainer that probably could be fixed with striping and signage for under 10k.

The county just funded some improvements for the stretch of Waxpool between Rte 28 and Broderick. I think part of the plan is to create a second right turn lane from southbound Pacific onto westbound Waxpool.

I am one of those people that will not use that shopping center. I drive by there every day on my way home from work but will not stop due to the congestion. If they fixed it, I would patronize the shops.

That was how it was originally constructed. At some point, they changed it to extend the far right westbound lane of Waxpool past Pacific. I think they were trying to alleviate backed up traffic from 28 North in the evenings by providing more room for traffic to merge onto Waxpool from 28.

Notice that they only allocated design money - no construction funding yet, so I wouldn't hold my breath...

that was the original design until they changed it to allow more west bound traffic... presumably because it's too damn close to Rt28 interchange to start with.

The flow of traffic could have been better if the design had not removed the access to the shopping center from 28 by Carmax. That wouldn't necessarily address the westbound Waxpool issues but still would have been nice.

Agree. One of my favorites is that they made the south bound pacific no turn on red. A good thing for rush hour but the rest of time a waste. Plus in some engineers bright mind they allow you to go, then stop you while the north bound pacific light is green, then let you go again when the turn lanes from wax pool are green. Stupid! Traffic looses all momentum then.

Don't forget all the people that get in the right lane that are going to go straight on Pacific and then make the illegal right turn onto Waxpool. It's so prevalant that the people that actually wait in the proper lane for the green lights feel like suckers. I counted 10 cars the other night just in the few minutes I was waiting.

Oh, and I'm another one that refuse to use that shopping center. Now, how do I get the Honda dealership to move? :rolleyes3:

I'm also among those who just won't go to that shopping center due to the traffic. I got a letter a few days ago from our county supervisor Shawn Williams saying there are now plans to move forward with the connection of Gloucester Pkwy through to Nokes Blvd. This connection will provide another exit out of the shopping area as well as pull a bunch of the north-ashburn-bound cars off of Waxpool. I think this will help a lot, but sadly the road won't be done until Dec 2014.

I find it so hard to understand why it should take almost 2.5 years to complete this 1/2miles of road. Maybe we should outsource it to the folks building the new HOT lanes on the beltway - I think they have almost added 15 miles worth of road -4 lanes wide and exit ramps in about the same amount of time.

Actually, that's a pretty aggressive timeline, considering they haven't even started the road design plans yet. Also, essentially the entire road traverses wetlands......and the red tape associated with that is tremendous!

I'll bet the actual construction, when it starts, will go fairly quickly.

$1m to design? That's ridiculous. Like the OP said, just cut out a dedicated merge lane for the southbound pacific turning onto waxpool and be done.

I would also consider removing the light entirely (99% of people don't need to go from Wegmans to AOL and vice versa). For people needing to turn left from Wegmans onto Waxpool, open the Carmax entrance/exit and use the cloverleaf to go where you need =) That or service/frontage roads would be a good idea =)

Not a sermon, just a thought.

umm what about the people on Waxpool east that need to turn into that shopping center? I agree something needs to be done but taking out the light is not the solution. Plus in the not to distant future Pacific will be a major north south alternative to 28

They go up to 28 and do the cloverleaf thing... shorter than waiting at the left turn signal =)
