Just curious if anybody else in Broadlands has been approached by a man first name Les that is soliciting donations for the Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department. He drives a black Honda civic MD tags. He has an ID but anyone can make a fake ID these days. He was soliciting in the Sturman, Reamy Scara area. Thanks.

Ashburn VF & RD comes around every year. They do not pay outside marketers for their fundraising. The person should have a maroon shirt and cap on when he visits your door.

They're the one door to door vendor that I welcome. I would so much rather they fundraise that way than standing in the medians. To me it always seemed legit because they'll happily take a check payable to the fire dept. Also they used to offer a family photo appointment at the fire station as a thank you, I don't know if they still do this.

Yes - he's legit. The same guy has visited us for the last two years. He came by our house a couple of weeks ago and as the previous poster said, after writing him a donation check payable to "Ashburn VFD" he gave us a family photo voucher that we took to the fire station on Ashburn Road and had our kid's pictures taken. There were other families there too. The firemen were very nice and even spent time with our two kids showing them around the fire trucks.

Yup - same guy visits us, and we donate, as well.

    A couple of questions:

Does it bother anyone else that the person collecting money for the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Fighter Assocation clips your check to the front of his clipboard and then waves it in front of your neighbor saying "You should donate, your neighbor did?" I know it's unlikely my neighbor is going to steal my bank account number, but it makes me nervous anyway.

Do you feel the person collecting money for the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Fighters should honor the "No Soliciting" sign on my door?

Lastly, I'm sure our volunteer fire fighters do a great job, but why isn't having a full time fire department a budget priority? Has there been discussion of a full time department in the past? I've never lived in a community with a volunteer department. I'm trying to understand, as populated as this area has become, why we have one?

I'm sure if you asked the gentleman to keep your check/donation private, he would honor the request. Should they honor the sign? Probably. But if we want to get technical for a moment, Loudoun County ordinance 828.03 (B) [3] specifically exempts community service organizations (among a few others).

I mean I get it. They came to my door two years ago when my wife was away and had our checkbook - I had nothing to give the guy, and it was awkward. And we get WAY too many door knocks around here in the spring. But this is also a guy that volunteers his time to help protect his community, and further volunteers to go door knocking to raise money - which must have its down moments. I may give him a little more leeway than the 9th pest control company that has come knocking that week.

I, too, have found the fire situation around here to be odd. Having said that, there are more than 500 full time staff in the fire department with somewhere around 1500 volunteers. It's a big and rapidly changing county with some areas still very rural and others rapidly developing. For the time being, the hybrid system seems to be working pretty well for the needs we have and the variety of communities served.
