We have taken our 12 year old to two orthodontists in the area. Dr. Lee by Loudoun Hospital, price was about $4500, Dr. Wiger in Southern Walk, $6000. She needs to wear braces for 18 to 24 months. Any recommendations on your favorite Dr. and an idea on prices.

I highly recommend Dr. Apt; his new office is over by Fuddruckers and Bertucci's. He did my braces (as an adult), and he's working with my older son (unusual case) and my younger son as well. He did a great job with me; he's the first orthodontist who told me I didn't need to remove my wisdom teeth to get a good result and my teeth look great!

How painful have your braces been as an adult? I'm considering getting them but some folks I've talked to say the pain is really bad. Wish I would have had them as a kid.

I'm 39 and got Invisalign this past summer. Love it, only slightly achey. No extractions needed (I have bad crowding) but I did get my wisdom teeth pulled over 10 years ago.

Your price quotes seem slightly high. What type of braces are you considering for your 12 yr old?

In my experience, they were only painful (and really not that bad) for a short time right after tightening. Most of the time they were just "there". The worst part of the braces for me, was just the initial period of getting used to having them on my teeth, but I adjusted quickly. My braces were on for a little over a year, then retainers for awhile. It probably does depend on your individual pain threshold, though.

I'm so glad I was able to finally get my teeth straightened out, it was worth the time and money invested!

My two older kids are both in braces. $$! I take them to Legacy Orthodontics in Leesburg. He had recently opened up when we went to him for a consultation so he gave a very good rate of $3,000 per kid. We're on a payment plan and it's costing us $200 a month.

The office isn't as fancy as Dr. Wiger's, but it's nice enough. A pleasant waiting area with computers and a video game for the kids.

Suzanne... that is quite a range you've been quoted, though I can speak from personal experience that I have had higher quotes than that for our 11-y.o. (by Dr. Joe - near Sunoco/Dunkin Donuts, and by Dr. Apt). Of course, it all depends on the treatment plan, and type of appliances that need to be used. In the end, price is only one aspect, you need to look at the treatment plan and compare the two. Also try getting a second/third opinion to make sure that the treatment plan is appropriate. The plans we got from the two doctors were slightly different, and we felt that Dr. Apt's plan was a bit more conservative, which we liked, but his quote was a bit more. We are yet to make a decision, as budget is definitely an issue right now.

Four of my family members have been treated by Dr. Wiger. In fact, most of my friend's children are or have been treated there as well. He has a tremendous amount of experience, cutting-edge technology and a true gift for creating incredible smiles. If you were having cosmetic surgery on your face, would you just seek the lowest price? Orthodontics should be looked at in the same way. I know that there are many patients that have been awarded "best smile" in their high school and they were treated by Dr. Wiger. My kids love Dr. Wiger and his staff is so wonderful.

We used Dr. Apt for all 3 of our kids. Comparable prices and great results. He was highly recommended to us from our previous orthodontist in Fairfax County.

My daughter (13 yr old) is currently being treated by Northern Va Orthodontics (Brambleton Town Center) - Dr. Casagrande. She has to have 22+ months of treatment along with some oral surgery for impacted teeth. The price is high- $6500, and my insurance only covers $1500. They have many different payment plan options, and offer discounts for chosing 'pay in full' in one lump.
The office staff is very friendly as is the Dr. We know a lot of families that have used them.

They offer a free consult with panoramic xray too if you just wanted to get a 3rd opinion.

Just wanted to put a plug in for Dr. Wiger! We needed braces for our oldest recently, and had 4 consultations with orthodontists in the area. I had initially crossed Dr. Wiger off my list after researching on the forum and seeing the high quote mentioned previously, but I'm glad I gave him a shot! He was very personable and great with my daughter, his office staff is very friendly, and I was very impressed with how up-to-date his technology is. He has a unique way of putting braces on that is much easier for the patient. Best of all, since he participates with our insurance, and sent out a coupon for a sizeable discount, he came in at the lowest price of all the other doctors we had seen!

Another vote for NVO, Dr. Zach Casagrande. You can have a free consultation complete with photos, panoramic X-rays etc. Lisa is great with working almost any financial plan that works for your family, interest free too. He and his assistants are amazing, kind, great with kids and parents. I think my boys teeth look amazing, with no extractions. He has done a great job. I didn't do invisalign with the boys, but he is certified and does teach other orthodontists the method.
    Can't say enough great things about his practice. I wish he'd run for President. We'd all be a lot better off. (;

Another vote for NVO. I'm doing Invisalign right now with Dr Zach Casagrande and have been blown away by his team and the entire experience. I feel like I'm at the spa when I go there honestly - everyone is so friendly and caring. I wish all medical offices were like this.

The consultation, as kmjtt says, was free and Lisa presented a multitude of financial options. I ended up paying around $6k. I've waited all my life to fix my British teeth and finally I can do it and in the knowledge that I've got an expert on hand to take care of it. Dr C is the top, certified Invisalign dentist in the area.

We're also going to NVO for our one daughter with our second getting her braces in about 6 months. We highly recommend Dr Cassagrande s well.

This won't be an issue for all families, but the negative for us with Dr Wiger was that he schedules by age, not by family. Since our daughters are 3 years apart, their visits could not be done on the same day, so that pushed us to look at other options and found NVO.

I'm so glad to see this post. We are new to the area, and have 2 kids who need braces! I've taken them to meet: Lee, Casagrande, Apt, & Legacy...none wowed me. I really want someone good for them but also within a few miles. Traffic here is crazy! Since we have 2 going in at the same time, I was hoping for a family discount, but I guess that doesn't exist?

I've never seen a family discount from all the places I've looked, and thats been from Leesburg to Reston.

Seems all places do give cash discounts, so if you pay for the entire thing at once (cash or credit card) you get a discount.

    Welcome to Cashburn!!!

I'd have to look it up to confirm, but I'm pretty sure Dr Apt offered a sibling discount. We have been happy with their office.
