I must state my extreme disappointment in our neighborhood youth regarding their manners on this Halloween night. Let me explain. I am currently home from the hospital after just giving birth and am not able to get up quickly or frequently. As my husband was not home, I did not want to disappoint the kids by not handing out candy so I placed them in a basket with a note to "take 1 piece only please" and set the basket out front. After 20 minutes, my basket of 90 full sized candy bars was empty, and this was before 6:30 pm! My husband had to run out and buy more candy. Due to the greediness and inconsideration of a few kids, the others had to miss out on our treats. Parents, please remind your kids about manners, saying thank you would be nice and of course, think of others before snatching a whole basket of candy. For goodness sake, how much sugar do they need? I normally love trick or treating time and have for years given out full sized candy bars but this incident really made me upset and angry.

Congratulations on the new baby! I understand your frustration but I think you would have been disappointed in most neighborhoods. I know you would have been disappointed in the mid 1980's in Leesburg because bowls like that didn't last long then either.

We have had that experience in the past where the bowl was emptied very early. This year I stayed home to hand out candy while the hubby took the kids out, and I have to say that all kids that came to my door were polite, said thank you, and I was very impressed. I'm sure that at least one of those kids, however, would have filled his/her bag with the contents of my bowl had I simply left it there on the porch. It has happened before.

I should also add that this works great in the reverse. My kids go through their stash, get rid of that which they don't like, we put it in the bowl, put it on the porch, and it is gone in 20 minutes!

Yes, I must add that most of the kids in our end of Southernwalk are polite and very sweet, which is why I hadn't thought twice about doing this. I normally stay home and hand them out while my husband take my older son but this was an exception. Definitely never again.

Here is my unscientific poll from going around the loop of Ridgeway and High View Trail in Southern Walk: At least 6 to 8 of the "please take 1" baskets out on the front porches....all empty at 6:30. My daughter quickly learned and gave me the "not going up there", but I forced her to look anyway for the scientificness [I know, not a real word] of the study. For everyone thinking of doing this...don't bother. If you want to go with your kids, just go and turn your lights out. If you don't want to answer your doorbell....same.

Maybe ONE child out of hundreds took your candy, and you feel the need to post and blame the "neighborhood youth"? What you did, and the outcome, is as old as Halloween. It's Halloween, not Stepford Night Out.

Don't be too quick to judge the neighborhood. I think there were just a couple of bad apple teenagers out there stealing the bowls. I was out with my little ones on Stone Hollow and some guy jumped out of a dark SUV with a mask and a backpack. I thought he must have known the owners of the house, but there was only a bowl on the porch. He took a piece in front of my kid and walked away, but I saw him go back after we left; I presume he emptied the bowl! Sigh. That explains the empty bowls (one which was turned over on the sidewalk) we had seen earlier.

I wanted to at least get his tags, but couldn't go chasing him down with my kids in tow! Seriously, get a job and buy your own $%#$% candy!

I put my bowl out at 6 and when we got back at 7:30 there was still more than half left. I went through my kids bags and emptied what they didn't want into the bowl and when I checked it at 8:30, still half full. I left it out overnight and this morning it was empty, which was fine because little ones wouldn't have been out that late. My neighbors who we went out with also did the same thing and they all had candy left when we returned.

Don't let one bad seed taint your outlook on the other 99%.

Happened to me a few years ago. Last year we were out of town for Halloween and I was dreading what would happen to our house. Rightly so, our pumpkins were kicked to pieces and left on the step for the squirrels to finish off.

I was out with my youngest trick-or-treating last night and I witnessed an older non-costume clad older kid dump the entire contents of a treat bowl into his bag. Much to his surprise, and my amusement, an adult opened the door the house and said, "Can't you read? The sign says take 2 and I am watching you." The older kid was stunned and dropped his bag and ran down the street. The adult dumped the contents of the kids bag back into the treat bowl and closed the door. That was a wonderful thing to see....true meaning to "trick or treat.":devil2:

I went our trick-or-treating with my children, so I left a bowl on my front porch - with the FULL expectation that it would be empty when I returned home. My children only encountered a few homes that had an empty bowl up front but still received plenty of candy from others. So as annoying as it is to you, the younger children don't appear to be upset.
