At 8:30 this evening, my doorbell rang and a young boy (~13) that I have not seen before asked whether I had tin foil for a science project. Odd time, odd request.

I am certain that he meant aluminum foil and that is really weird!

Isn't tin foil and aluminum foil the same thing?

they probably needed it for a science fair project- and didn't have any at home. and maybe their parents weren't home. or maybe the parents were home and said "go ask a neighbor! how can you tell me you need tin foil at 8:30 at night when i am trying to put your little brother to bed! we are out of foil and you are out of luck!". resourceful kid. how is any of this really weird?

I thought the very same thing until I looked at the date which was a Friday night. Further, I would have asked about the project, the class, etc. out of curiosity and not just say no and close the door, but the original poster never elaborated.

Why did I think this was odd? Unless he just recently moved into my neighborhood, I never saw him before, but I admit that I don't know everyone on every block. I don't often (well, never before) get requests for tin foil at night from people I don't know. If it was for a science project, there hasn't been a forum member to post that has a child having a similar project. So still odd, but not nefarious.

I absolutely would think that a 13 YO unknown kid asking for tin foil on a Friday night would be weird. Wouldn't a kid go to a house of someone he knows to get something for a school project?
