Looking for advice from anyone who has been to both locations. We have normally gone to OBX (Corolla) every summer, but thinking about trying Hilton Head this summer. We have two kids 6 & 8 so looking for a kid-friendly area. Pros/Cons?

I think they are very different. Never stayed in Corolla, only drove through as we stayed further south in the OBX. Our favorite is HH. It has lots to offer from beach to bike trails to shopping and other commercialized fun things. It is very clean and the restaurant selection is better in my opinion. You are also within an hour or two of Savannah and Charleston if you like sight seeing. I like the ocean much better in HH too. I find the undertow and rip currents too strong for my liking (and for the kids) in the OBX. I just think HH is more pedstrian/bike friendly. However, I have always thought I would like to stay in the 4x4 access area of Corolla sometime, just for something different. Good luck!

HH is great for kids. Plenty to do other than just the beach (which can be plenty!). Golf, putt-putt, biking, sailing lessons, numerous eateries, movie theaters if bad weather and nearby Savannah (love this city!). Pretty much the whole island is fine with regards as to where you stay with kids. We have been in condo rentals and most recently stayed at the Westin Resort in a suite. Most of the larger places also have pools from simple to more extravagant. HH also has excellent boat tours of the inter-coastal waterway with plenty of wildlife and even dolphins.

Thanks for the responses everyone! Definitely want to give HH a try. And I've always wanted to visit Savannah as well.

Been to both but if I had my choice I'd choose HH every single time.

I love OBX but HH is great for a change. The best thing about HH is biking right on the beach - the kids loved it!

this post inspired us to give HH a try. Does anyone have recommendations on areas in which to stay? We have three generations coming with us (grandparents, parents, kids 6/9). Any insight is appreciated.

The majority of the island is divided into "plantations". Some larger and newer than others. All have some residential/commercial component. We generally choose the Palmetto Dunes area, no particular reason why, just seems to be where the house/hotel we choose is located. Sea Pines is home to Harbor Town, which is fun, but you can access any of the plantations without staying there. Those two are my favorites though. Have fun!

You could also try Isle of Palm, which is outside of Charleston, SC. If the tides are right, you will get tidal pools and the kids will get a chance to see starfish, small fish (food), etc. Out in the ocean you can see dolphins, maybe a whale, but if you are "lucky" small sharks 2'-3' feeding on the small fish. Downtown Charelston is very nice and you also have a minor league baseball team and a soccer team as well. Another draw is a place called Patriots Point http://www.patriotspoint.org/ the kids can tour an Aircraft Carrier, ships, a submarine and some of the aircraft on deck.
