I have already been in touch with the GM about this. Let's all keep our eyes open and our heads level.

I agree we need to use caution of reports and what is true and isn't true. I am deeply disturbed if the Sheriff's office only has one report vs. the three on two different days as what is being circulated - the Sheriff's office should be well aware of them and action taken county wide (such as an alert). Clearly there is a disconnect on reporting the incidents, information that is out in the community on what did or didn't occur, and what the Sheriff's office is saying. Whatever the case, keeping vigilant is always a good idea.

It's called 'The Telephone Game' remember? :) I think that is part of Stevens' comment - focusing on a level set of information and trying to ensure information isn't morphed and expanded as it's circulated.

That's the kind of irrational behavior that does more harm than good. It makes every responsible gun owner look bad.

that's definitely a risk in this situation. also people misinterpret info and run with it- this morning's incident was a sighting not a shooting, for example.

for the record i haven't reported anything that wasn't verified- since i started this thread i feel compelled to clarify that.

i agree that we don't want the "sniper white van syndrome" again- that was AWFUL to live through. but i have no problem with every vehicle or man fitting that description being checked out. innocent people don't mind due diligience.

thank god it wasn't a thin blonde woman in a mini-van- we'd NEVER find who this is! :)

(too soon for a joke? my apologies if you think so...)

I don't believe I'm too far removed from the original source, but this morning the black truck waited outside of the girls' home. BB gun or not, this is a child endangerment issue.

Phone call just made by Mr Vickers confirming this morning's activity as I am typing this.

I didn't say it wasn't a dangerous situation, I was merely pointing out why it may not have been lumped into the original crime.

Thanks to all of you who are taking this seriously while, at the same time, remaining vigilant against the spread of bad information.

I have just spoken by phone with the mother of the boy who was the subject of the first report. She tells me that LCSO has received the report of an incident this morning which apparently described a similar vehicle. She further tells me the vehicle is a black, four-door pick-up truck, with large, shiny wheel rims. Also, she tells me that LCSO has put the SROs from local schools onto the street in a search for the vehicle. I can personally confirm there is now a significant, visible number of LCSO cars on the streets in and around Broadlands (I was just on the road myself, and saw four of them in the area around the intersection of Waxpool and Claiborne).

The boy's mother tells me that both her son and her daughter reported being struck, yesterday, by BBs, though none of the actual pellets have been recovered.

I have been in contact with Supervisor Williams, as well, who will be keeping an eye on the situation.

I am awaiting a call back from LCSO to confirm any additional reports, and will post here anything else I learn.

I just got off the phone with Liz Mills from the LCSO. Liz confirmed the LCSO has and will continue to step up patrols in the area.

She requested that if anyone has additional information on the truck (the updated description) or person(s) to fill out the online form (see link below) or call the non-emergency # 703-777-1021:

    https://secure.coplogic.com/dors/en/filing/selectincidenttype

if you are having a difficult time with the link (provided above) you can use this link:
    http://sheriff.loudoun.gov/index.aspx?NID=213

    However she stated, if you see the truck or person immediately call 911. Below is an updated description from one of the Mom's who's child was involved in yesterday's incident;

The truck is a double cab, black, decked out truck with tinted windows and large silver wheels. It may be a Lincoln. It does not have a front license plate. One person believes that the rear plate was from Illinois because of the red lettering and the calligraphy writing. She was sure that it was an out of State plate. The man was described as being a large black man with a fine line very short beard. His skin is light black, described as coco colored. He was wearing a large necklace and a dark colored hoodie.

I was at Mill Run during the students' departure today. Very orderly and apparently secure. I spoke to principal Vickers who told me this has been his only issue all day (and I thanked him for his professionalism). Spoke also to SRO Ressler, who said he was particularly pleased by the comments he's seen online showing we don't all jump to conclusions. He added that LCSO would still like to hear from anyone who has information about these events that LCSO has not already made public. Speaking to the crossing guard there and, later, to my fifth-grade son, I found out that she and (at least most of) the students were not even aware anything unusual was going on.

I have received an unconfirmed report that a vehicle matching the description given by the mother was stopped near the school, and that two people later came to the scene so one could drive the vehicle away. If true, it may mean the driver was arrested. I am trying to get confirmation on that now.

Channel 4 TV had a truck on the scene just after the school buses left. I spoke to their reporter briefly.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this truck a thousand times in the neighborhood. If it's the same Lincoln truck I've seen with oversized wheels and tinted windows, it's an Oklahoma license plate.

Liz Mills, of LCSO, has told me just now that she is not able to confirm an arrest at this time, but she will contact me if anything is ready for public release.

She emphasized that, even after an arrest is made (should one, in fact, be made), that anyone with relevant information should still contact the Sheriff's office at 703-777-1021, as a successful prosecution takes more than an arrest. (Let me add, as an attorney, that this can be more important than it sounds, as it is possible for an officer to stop a car legally for a lot of reasons, then arrest based on probable cause that is not related to the reason for the stop or the reason a search is going on. For example, if an officer stops a car and discovers the driver is not licensed, that can be the basis for the arrest, but it won't mean a thing to prosecuting the driver for something like today's events. That will take witnesses and other evidence.)

Ms. Mills also expressed her appreciation for the efforts our community is making to stay in contact with LCSO and to avoid the spread of unconfirmed rumors.

Now I think I'll go spend some time with my son.

    possibly dark green truck?

Any chance the truck could be dark green? I saw such a truck this afternoon, driven by a man who matched the description in many respects. Of course I was scrutinizing all black pick-up trucks I saw, and I had to look twice to see if this one was black or not because the green was so dark.

My understanding is that one of the incidents took place around 5pm, which would make the light difficult to tell the difference between dark green and black.

Is there any update on this? Many rumors going around. The panic seems to have disappeared.

I read that a vigilant neighbor spotted the truck and called the police. They followed the truck to the Wegmans in Leesburg where the driver was cuffed and taken away by officers. I have not heard if any arrest was made, but I haven't heard about any more shootings either so...

There have been no arrests, and no more sightings. I guess the Wegman's situation turned out to be the wrong person, since there was no arrest. I'm staying vigilant, but hoping this guy is long gone. But until we know for sure, my eyes and ears are open wide and I'm walking my kids home from the busstop.

Large black truck (a Lincoln stretch-cab pickup) with Mississippi Plates, Tinted Glass, Chrome Rims, Large Tires -- passing Harris Teeter, headed toward Ridgeway Drive @ 7:30 PM March 11. 911 was called and truck went into VOW.
