saw that this morning... here's hoping it's a good thing for HT. The Kroger's chain is pretty well respected on the west coast. Hoping it brings some of the HT prices down! :)

    Flynn and others--

I enjoy your new Broadlands forum changes too.:D

I saw this same story on Supermarket News' website while doing some research for an upcoming research project for one of my online Food Science/Nutrition KSU Master's degree classes. Also, in some Kroger store markets (i.e. Mid-Atlantic, Houston, Texas, Southern California, and Cincinnati, Ohio regions), Kroger has eliminated its double coupon policy. So Kroger's prices may still be higher in some markets. I guess we shall see.;)

    Articles are below--enjoy!:D

I recently shopped at the Kroger down in Harrisonburg. The signs that announced the elimination of their coupon doubling policy also stated that prices had been reduced on thousands of items. I walked up and down every aisle to conduct some comparison shopping, and I was delighted by consistently low prices across the board for both national brands and Kroger's own house brand. The weekly specials were also quite good, especially for meats and produce. We'll see how much of this trickles down to the Teet over the next year or two.

I hope all Harris Teeter's become 'Kroger'. I am tired of the high prices.

I don't think HT is far off in price compared to others, I think the service and selection is much better than Giant , Safeway or Shoppers. I hope quite frankly the Kroger merger doesn't mess up a good thing.

You think ANY chain brand store in Ashburn is going to lower prices just because the rest of their stores have lower prices? :pofl:

BTW, if it's been a while since you checked out the formerly Food Lion, formerly Bloom, and now once again Food Lion store in Leesburg, you need to pay a visit. While the Bloom experiment was a total failure, the store got a nice remodeling job out of the deal. Bloom's prices were sky high, but they've been lowered thanks to the re-re-branding back to Food Lion. The store also has some items that the other chains don't carry, so it's worth putting Food Lion into your grocery shopping rotation. Oh, and one more thing – the staff seems to have gotten a major upgrade, too... very friendly and always helpful (much more so than at any time in the past).

I don't think I've seen it that far off, the only thing that has been a little higher is the meat department, other than that I feel they've been competitive. The online service shopper is the main attraction that I would not want to see change. That is well worth it.

I shop Harris Teeter for the sales, which can be very good, but Wegmans for the regular stuff.

I hear from very good sources that the HT brand will survive and continue to grow. HT will certainly benefit from Kroger's buying power. Deal won't be completed until November. Might be some HT stores becoming Kroger and some Kroger stores becoming HT. Nothing specific or finally approved until after the deal is memorialized.

I think our HT is a nice, well-managed and convenient store. But the prices are crazy. On the things I buy every week...each item is at least .25 more than I commonly see. Although I hate going there and how long it takes to get the shopping done, you really just can't beat WalMart. I've totally converted to them for my 2-3 times a month big trips.

    Agree.
Try comparision shopping online (both have their products and prices listed online.) from produce to frozen, it was crazy how much more HT was!

Harris Teeter has great sales, which enables them to match or beat other stores. Plus, they accept competitor coupons. If you shop right, the prices are fine...adding to the convenience and always quick checkouts.

I don't have time to "shop right" and monkey about with sale circulars and coupons. More power to those that do, but I do not. I need reliably lower pricing on the things I buy all of the time...milk, cereal, meat, coffee, soup, broccoli, apples, cheese, chicken. They are never ever ever less expensive on those things. My coffee....this week they are $1.50 more than WalMart. A six pack of Pediasure...9.99 at WalMart....11.99 at Teeter. That's more than Walgreens.

I would have to agree that Walmart is icky too but I go for the non-perishable items and leave the perishables to Sam's, Safeway and HT. I do all my prescriptions at HT and I am very pleased with their service. It's wonderful when you walk up and they greet you by name :)

It will be interesting to see how much business the new Wal-Mart in the Dulles Landing development (I believe it's still targeted for a first Q 2014 opening) will draw from HT. The biggest advantage the BTC HT has for those of us that live near it is its location. They are able to charge higher prices because people will pay them. People will pay them due to the convenience of shopping there (though I am starting to get frustrated with the waits to checkout in the mid to late afternoon when they don't have as many registers open and the crowd starts to pickup). We will go by Wegman's, Wal-Mart, Sam's, etc. for larger trips, but just doens't make sense to go to those stores for the quick things like bread, milk, eggs, fruits, etc. that we buy more often. However, I can see us going to the new Wal-Mart often and not to HT once it opens.
