Support a Eagle Ridge local 6th grader in her fundraising goal and purchase a magazine subscription!

Hundreds of magazines available for subscription including People, Star, and US Weekly. There are kids Magazines, Magazines in Spanish, Time, Cooking, and Sports, just about anything you can think of - there are over 700 to choose from. Renew existing subscriptions, give a subscription as a gift, or just a buy one to support a great cause. Subscriptions are offered at a discount, some up to 90%! A percentage of the sales goes back to Eagle Ridge.

Does the percentage of the proceeds actually go to Eagle Ridge or is this a fundraiser for the PTO?

 

Since checks are made out to Eagle Ridge Middle School and not the PTO - it would be the school

 

It goes to the PTO. I am so glad my kids are past that. I hate when they try to make kids sell things.

 

The PTO's sole reason for being is to help the school by purchasing things the school doesn't have funds for, and to support the school in other ways by holding staff luncheons, etc. This is a fundraiser that will provide money for field trips, classroom supplies, new technology, and other needs the school has that aren't paid for by funds provided by the county, thus the money goes to the school either directly or indirectly.

 

Sorry I wasn't clear but cobymom is correct, nothing in what was sent home said PTO and the money goes to the school directly or indirectly . We don't have family in the area so our network is very small. I was just trying to help my daughter do something she seemed enthusiastic about so please let me know if you want to help her

 

The winners of the sales contest were picked up in a limo and taken to Chuck e Cheese. Plus they won whatever the cool electronics are when my girls were there..

 

The school only gets 40% - a lot of the money also goes to the prizes and the limo and the assemblies...

Speaking of the assembly, I really resent my child missing a class to go to a fundraising advertisement. When we as a community are discussing going back to school earlier and earlier in order to have more time to prepare for high stakes testing yet we can find time to pull the kids out of classes for something like this, the priorities are skewed. Sorry but my child WILL NOT be selling any magazines. It's bad enough that instructional time was stolen from her for this already.

 

I have to agree with jdhauer. When I realized how little was going to the school, that some of the money was going for prizes to incentivize the sales, and the prices were significantly higher than other sources (discountmags.com, etc.) we decided to not let our daughter participate. I'd rather see a list of things the school needs that the County won't purchase for them and either buy it myself or donate towards than diverting time and resources for this kind of stuff.

 

Honestly, 40% is more than I would expect. I usually just buy a few things for myself and call it a day.

 

Something to think about: if you won't let your kid help raise funds for the school then maybe you should keep them home on the day the whole grade goes on their PTA-funded field trip. I'm making my son hit the pavement and sell, sell, sell. We've been in school districts before (Clarke County, Fairfax County) that don't have active PTAs and it sucks. And as for academic time--my son needs time in the classroom as much as the next kid-- but as long as it isn't happening every week/month I'm ok with a little out-of-classroom experience.

 

I don't like fundraisers. I didn't like them when I was a kid and I don't like them now. My parents were very strict and because of the language barrier, did not take me out to sell, and would not let me go out on my own. I was always embarrassed to come to school with an empty order form while the other students celebrated prizes around me.

Now that I have my own 2, we can't sell door to door because guess what.. all my neighbor's kids are selling the same stuff or something else. And I work from home so there's no selling to my coworkers.

This year Hillside ES sent home a note doing away with fundraisers. They asked for a monetary donation to the PTO and let me tell ya, I was MORE than happy to send a check so my kids wouldn't have to deal with the same embarrassment I did.

I don't think it's right to say kids that don't raise funds shouldn't attend the PTA-funded field trip. I don't think anyone is complaining about the fact that the PTA needs money. There are just other ways to do it.

My 2 cents.

 

I'm not sending my kid to school to sell magazines and go to a BMX show. I send my kid to go to class not to raise money for the school.

I'd much rather make a direct donation or participate in restaurant nights, activities that do not negatively impact the primary purpose of why most people send their kids to school.
