I am moving to broadland town home soon and would like to know if there are specific home security that people use in the area. I currently use vintage and I like them but I want to find out about other options.

    Thanks!

Welcome to the neighborhood! I have seen several signs around the community for Ackerman Security, so they seem popular. We use Vector and have been very pleased with their service.

We had ADT in our townhouse before....expensive and not worth it. We switched to Ackerman..and have been very pleased with the service and even moved them into our SFH we moved into in Broadlands. The only thing i wasn't pleased with was the local sales rep they sent to "price out" our system. When i moved into the new house and I talked to him and he said he'd take care of me as a repeat customer----i got 10% of a 1100 system...which as it turns out, was the same deal offered in the Val-Pak mailer. Not to mention, i had to take care of all the details on the account side to close out my townhouse/establish new house service. To me, that consolidation could've been taken care of by him....or atleast he could've been more helpful than "You'll have to call this number to take care of that--i don't do that." All he did was walk in...get me to sign some papers and give him a credit card. I don't expect something-for-nothing, but that coupled with the uselessness when i needed a few questions answered left a sour taste in my mouth. The competition is too high out there for me to put up with that crap. If not for the breach-of-contract penalty i faced for cancelling the townhouse service (HOW HARD IS IT TO TRANSFER AN ACCOUNT????)...i would've probably gone with another company. My pest control service transferred my existing contract...why should i have to start a new one?

The monthly price/great phone service/installers are worth the value though. If i need someone back out at the house though, i will be requesting someone else.

I do wish i'd heard Dave Ramsey's promotion for "Simply Safe Alarm company" which is $15/month and no contract. that would've been worth looking into.

Thanks a lot for that tip; I haven't listened to Dave's show lately and had not heard of Simply Safe. I'm watching some videos about it on YouTube and it seems like a decent product. If I get it I'll post back here. I was robbed in 2008 when I lived in ArchStone behind the GW building. When that happened I activated ADT. I had two false alarms during the next few years (maintenance men). I worked in Reston at the time and ADT was good about calling me and alerting me about the alarm going off. On both occasions I was home(using the toll road) before the police arrived.

The police explained that they don't come with lights/sirens/high speed for alarms like that unless they know someone is in imminent danger so just the alarms and sirens might be enough for most. Thanks again for the tip!

Has anyone tried out Simpli Safe? Or any other recent recommendations for a security system?

we use Protection One now. changed after ADT increased the monthly monitoring rates again for our hardwired system. The protection one system is totally wireless and was recommended by our homeowner's insurance. we pay 29.99/monthly and love the wireless capability to enable/unable and even take snapshots of any movements when we have neighbors pet sit.
