When I went for a walk this morning I saw a potentially horrific crime scene at the corner of Claiborne and Waxpool that left me with a sickening feeling. There were several police cars and a vehicle with a visible dent on the hood. It appears as though a runner was hit by a vehicle as there was a running sneaker and pink jacket in the road. I really hope for the runner's sake that she/he is okay!!! Just very sad! Being a runner myself, I worry! Does anyone have any details?

The woman was taken to a local hospital, and her identity is still unknown as she was not carrying any ID.

Ohh crap! There was no blood in the road so I'm very hopeful that she's doing okay!!! Just left a nasty pit in my stomach from just seeing the sneaker and jacket in the street. Ugh!!!

I think prayers for her family would be a good thing for all of us to do.

just horrible... I am sure the woman is local and the driver too potentially. But can we all agree to wait for the facts to become available before we pass judgement on an already very painful and difficult situation?

And if this happened at 6:45 it was still dark (mostly)...

Unbelievable. I run past this intersection a few times a week. I just can't understand how this could happen with headlights, etc. Just shocked.

We don't know much as to how this happened yet. Prayers for all -- person driving and person killed and their families.

Having lived my past two summers in Montreal and Toronto, I used a bicycle as my main transportation source. I had fond memories of the courtesy motorists had with cyclists.

I ride my bike almost daily in the Southern Walk surroundings. I adhere to rules of the road and have had three very close calls and was even struck by a motorist near the Harris Teeter intersection. (minor incident but scared the heck out of me...the driver kept driving).

Today's tragic accident has me extremely upset and prayers are in my thoughts.

This is a terrible accident. It's true that many times drivers don't pay too much attention to things on the peripheral sides of the roads, especially when it's still dark out, so runners/walkers need to have extra caution. However, I have also witnessed many times runners who do not pay attention to what is occurring on the roads, and just keep running obliviously across a street without looking or pausing. If you combine the two scenarios - inattentive driver and inattentive runner - then that is always going to lead to an accident where the runner/walker gets injured.

It is a very unfortunate accident. Our prayers with both the families. It is a reminder to me and to most of us that when we drive powerful vehicles we drive with undivided attention to the road. We have too many distractions that we need to keep away from. We can make the road a safer place by pledging to do so.

So very, very sad. The lives of at least 2 different families were enormously impacted today. My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.

I think this can serve as a reminder to all that we all need to be careful, especially at intersections. At this particular intersection, I've seen drivers go through the lights as well as cyclists and runners not stopping. At 6:45, it definitely still was on the darker side. It was very dark when I left home around 6 and it was dark enough still at 7:20 that I had my lights on to return home. Reality is, even with a bright pink jacket, you cannot always be seen, especially when the sun is still rising. So, please, runners and cyclists, please - if you are going to go out around dawn or dusk, invest in some reflective clothing. So sorry for both families impacted today.

This is a tragic event which will cause people to be more aware, at least for awhile. I've been very nearly hit while running north across Wynridge at Claiborne in the cross walk, after first stopping and looking, by a car that was making a speedy right turn without first stopping at the stop sign.

People are driving distracted, too fast, and are being led by their egos. We need to rethink safety in Broadlands. Our children walk these streets and use the cross walks. We run and bike these streets. With all of the craziness I've witnessed, I'm sorry to say it was just a matter of time before something terrible like this happened.

We need to address the following:
-Community speed limits with serious consideration on whether 45 mph is safe in a residential area, even if it is four lanes.
-Four way stop problems (or eight way stops, as my husband calls them) and aggressive drivers
-Large Stop signs that continue to be stolen and have now been replaced by tiny stop signs which people unfamiliar with the area have trouble seeing. I witnessed one accident at the stop sign by the big Broadlands fountain, a few near misses, and at least 10 people (one was a moving truck last weekend) running the stop sign entirely without slowing down, which means they didn't see it.
-The sidewalk along Wynridge from Claiborne to Harris Teeter is too close to the road for the speed posted. We need to look at options to make this area safer for pedestrians.

I'm sure there are other items needing addressed. What is the process for creating a task force to look into the issues and come up with some recommendations? I'm happy to take the lead.

    Thanks!
    Julie

Julie, this is in no way to diminish from the tragic event... but you can implement all the safety precautions you want, but if people choose to ignore them or are too distracted, then events like today will unfortunately happen.

And you are only addressing "traffic". If what I heard is true, the "runner" this morning ran into the street when the car had the right-of-way.

If I interpret the pictures correctly.. It looks like the truck was heading or turned southbound on claiborne and the accident was on the furthermost side of the intersection (south side) near the corner of the church. The position in the road almost makes me think the truck had turned left onto southbound claiborne (since it was inbetween lanes, etc). Only interpretation of the photos.. no reporting to back that up. But of all our intersections.. I don't think you can get more clearly marked and indicated than this one.

Everyone should always remember... no matter what the rules.. no matter who is 'right'... if you are the 'smaller' one and more exposed, you always need to be defensive. Being "right" doesn't save your life and no amount of blaming the other guy will bring you back either. If you are a pedestrian, runner, biker, motorcyclist, or just car vs larger vehicle.. always take the defensive posture.

T8erman.. FYI ..Pedestrians must always be yielded the right of way at intersections and crosswalks. Bicycles, since they are considered “vehicles,” are subject to the same rules as other drivers; they are not always granted the right of way.
