A while back, the corner of the basement was really stinky. Now it permeates the entire basement. It smells like old pee, but worse. I suspect a dead animal in the wall, but where do I start? What sort of company do I call?

I'd suggest checking out your sump pump operation. If it hasn't run for a long time due to a float switch or pump problem, the stagnant water in the sump could cause the smell that you describe.

Thanks. Smell is definitely coming from a wall and the sump pump was going last night with the rain.

Make sure you don't have a dry p-trap somewhere. Pour water in all the drains. Sewer gas will work its way through dry traps.

What is the law that says that it is usually the simple solution? Morgan from http://www.veteranpest.com/ came over to check it out for me. Quoted an inspection price. He comes down into the basement and says, "It's kind of mildew/dead smell, but it smells stronger in the storage area." We open the freezer and ugh! So, my basement freezer is working...sort of. Not enough to keep the food frozen, but just cool enough for a slow, slow rot.

We walk back upstairs. He say's, "I cannot possibly charge you. It only took five minutes. " What a great guy. If you have an issue, I'd seriously recommend them. http://www.veteranpest.com/
