Once it was common practice to flush these medications down the toilet. We now know that these substances are bad for our environment - the ground, water, and air around us and only about half of the prescription drugs and other new contaminants are removed by treatment plants.

Loudoun County law enforcement agencies will again participate in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

The free event will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2014, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the following locations:
    • Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, Eastern Loudoun Station (46620 East Frederick Drive, Sterling, VA 20164)
    • Dulles South Public Safety Center (25216 Loudoun County Parkway, Chantilly, VA 20152)
    • Lansdowne Public Safety Center (19485 Sandridge Way, Leesburg, VA 20176)
    • Leesburg Police Department (65 Plaza Street NE, Leesburg, VA 20176)
    • Purcellville Police Location, Bush Tabernacle (250 South Nursery Avenue, Purcellville, VA 20132)

Walgreens provides a special prepaid envelope for $2.99 for disposal by mail.

We were out of town for this - do we know when an event like this will be held again Or if there is another method for disposal?

    Thanks! :)

This is usually done twice a year so probably come Spring. You can go here and sign up for updates from the County. http://www.loudoun.gov/index.aspx?NID=347

Personally, I wish pharmacies would collaborate with the DEA (or vice versa) to keep locked drop boxes available for disposal at any time.

I would advise against following the FDA recommendations. What our bodies get rid of is a growing concern to the water treatment plants because they do not have the technology to identify, much less purge all pharmaceuticals from our drinking water.
