Holiday Trash/Recycling Pickup?

    So what is the status of the trash/recycling pick-up for today? They have not taken anything from Awbrey place other than perhaps yard waste (which we did not have this week)

    One truck just came through our part about a half hour ago. Haven't looked outside yet to see if trash or recycle.

    Yes, they did come through here and take both. I was surprised the did it that late :)

    They showed up about 7pm at our house but didn't take the yard waste. Isn't that supposed to be picked up on Mondays?

    Trash and recycling picked up on Marsh Creek yesterday (recycling late 8:30pm?). Called Patriot (703-257-7100) this morning about yard waste still at curb. Said the truck didn't finish and to leave it out.

    Reminder...from the Broadlands Newsletter:
    • Monday, December 29, 2014: Trash and recycling will be picked up
    • Thursday, January, 1 2015: No trash or recycling pickup
    • Monday, January 5, 2015: Trash and recycling will be picked up

    Folks, it takes little time and effort to flatten your cardboard boxes and separate it from the regular trash. Nearly every house on our street had boxes on the curb and they were picked up with the trash. The truck did not have separate compartments.

    I think it depends on the truck and people. We had plenty of boxes that were not broken down (agree it takes only a min to do this) but were not picked up with the trash. They were left there for the recycling truck that came by this evening.

    Came by our house on Vestals Gap near Chickacoan about 20 minutes ago. I imagine lots of trips to empty the trucks for these guys today, slowing them down. I think it will be a long night for them.

    How much extra waste is created during the winter holiday season?

    Americans throw away 25% more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year's holiday period than any other time of year. The extra waste amounts to 25 million tons of garbage, or about 1 million extra tons per week!

    If every family reused just two feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet. If every American family wrapped just 3 presents in re-used materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football field 10 stories high. If we each sent one card less, we’d save 50,000 cubic yards of paper.
