I need a recommendation for an agent or insurance company for homeowners insurance. It seems my rate goes up every year.

Whomever you end up choosing, there is almost always savings to be had if you insure your car(s) and home together.

We had GEICO for auto and USAA for homeowners...but USAA kept jacking my rates every year, which kinda frosted me. Since GEICO uses "Travellers" for home insurance--and i had a bad experience with them....i went with State Farm on a combined policy. I called their local Ashburn Office, agent Joe Mullee - and have had nothing but great experiences (so far) with that office. Love that their local and i can go in there with a problem if need be!

I'm a USAA fan myself. We've had USAA for both auto and homeowners for many years.

Tangent - I'm NOT a fan of State Farm. Close friends of ours have been State Farm customers for decades. Their colleg-aged daughter got a DUI, and State Farm dropped the ENTIRE FAMILY. I could understand not covering their daughter anymore (or charging an arm and a leg to cover her), but cancelling the policy for the ENTIRE FAMILY??? That's ridiculous and no way to treat a long-term loyal customer. They personally know the local Ashburn State Farm agent, too. UNlike a good neighbor, State Farm will drop you like a hot potato and can't be trusted in my opinion.

I use Hanover insurance. Over the past 4 years, I have challenged all major companies to match what I have with Hanover, but they always fail. Hanover is excellent. One company never ever use is Northern Neck Insurance.. they are the absolute worse as they never pay claims even after they supposedly approve them.

i was warned about that about state farm after i joined......i tried USAA again and got an apples to apples comparison---but they were still considerably more expensive--which i was very surprised about. I'm going to look at Hanover i think...i'd rather be getting quotes while i'm on the good side of things :). Thanks for the reco stix!

To be honest, quite a few insurance companies do this. From a company perspective, the risk is higher than a potential reward. Imagine if the daughter had injured or killed someone? Why roll the dice and take a chance? While some people learn from their mistakes, a fairly large population doesn't. I worked for an insurance company for a few years and we rated every person from a risk perspective. If the family had an accident or two and then had a DUI, we would absolutely drop them. The amount we would have to raise the rates just to break even from a risk perspective made it improbable that they would stay a customer. By letting the family go we were doing them a favor.

You mentioned loyalty....the family broke that. State Farm promised to insure them with reasonable rates if they would practice safe driving. Since the daughter did not have her own policy and was covered under the parents, much like other things in life, the parents suffered the consequences of their daughters actions. Thankfully no one was injured and killed.
