I have noticed that airplane traffic and concomitant noise seems to have increased above us over the last year. I think it has to do with the new FAA system for controlling airplanes (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/faa-new-air-...). Dulles Airport does have a website addressing noise pollution (http://www.metwashairports.com/dulles/25...), phone number to call is on the bottom of the page. I contacted them and I encourage those who agree with me to do the same. Perhaps our voice will affect a change in flight patterns.

You know it's a funny thing...move to a neighborhood near an already existing airport and you will hear airplanes. Maybe you should have thought of that before you moved here. What I notice is when they don't fly over - especially that one at 11:30 -12:00 every night - it's much too quiet.

I was referring to an increase in airplane traffic.

    Don't troll.

    What airplane noise? ;)

I have lived in Eastern Loudoun most of my life and I guess I am just so use to it. Oh, I sleep with an air purifier fan that drowns out all but the loudest planes.

The new satellite guidance arrival systems has nothing to do with noise here. The noise we hear is almost exclusively for departing aircraft, not arriving. Aircraft have to be lined up for the arrival runways much further out than where Broadlands is. Dulles is implementing new arrival procedures that could have some impact further out.

I notice noise only when it is cloudy. The cloud layer - i am guessing - tends to echo back the sound. I dont see it to be an issue otherwise.

Airplane noise doesn't bother me. I moved near an airport and I like looking at airplanes as they fly over. What does bother me is hearing dog barking from neighbor's even inside my house with my windows and doors closed.

Maybe it's time to upgrade your windows, perhaps?

Calling won't do anything for flight patterns. Planes departing Runway 30 are the ones that go over Broadlands and are what gives us the beautiful noises throughout the day. It will be this way for years and years and years to come. They aren't changing the runways, and aren't changing the departure procedures.

Planes are getting quieter, so your best bet is to hope that more 787s and 350s come in and take over for the louder (747, 777) planes.

Dulles airport has been here since 1962...airplane sizes have changed as well as air traffic patterns.

It may be that Broadlands Station gets more plane traffic than other subdivisions.

There is an app named "flightradar24". Download it and you can see where the plane is coming from or going to, the type, speed and altitude. The heavies usually take off between 10PM and midnight and are the long distance flights. Also you'll notice on landings that some are much louder than others with the same type of plane. Pilots familiar with the airport glide in smoothly while others keep the throttle up and the air brakes on for power if needed.

The heavies are usually earlier-- there were 4 from 7-8PM, and there are 5 more triple 7's scheduled before 10, along with a 76 at 10. It looks like there are only 4 heavies from 10PM onwards...at least on a Saturday (although I am pretty sure IAD sees daily service from all of our international airlines).
