Played around with Blue Iris demo today and some IP cams, rainy day...

Much easier to get going than Milestone, and perhaps a little less taxing on the computer (although that ancient Dell of Kim's is not the ideal machine for this kind of stuff). Records audio perfectly, we tested it with the P1344 and the computer upstairs hooked into a stereo. Demo software for 15 days, $50 for unlimited cameras beyond that. Supposed to also have excellent tech support. Interface looks dated but pretty easy to work with, I'd rather have software that works than a pretty interface.

Here is a cctv DVR I found in a camera review that someone had linked, it looks great. Should have this in another thread I guess, but its in the general topic. :)

    http://www.amazon.com/Channel-Embed...ration/dp/B0013F6XJS/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

New 4 Channel Embedded Linux US411L H.264 Network DVR With No Hard Drive, Real time True Triplex with built web server for remote viewing and operation, backup and operation 4CH DVR 120FPS SATA ready.

Just need to throw in a hard drive (and of course buy some cameras). It supports D1 / HD1 / CIF Resolutions. 4 cams can record at 7fps at full resolution (360x240 at 30 fps or 720x480 at 7fps). You can view it remotely as well.

Given the Street lamp damage rampage thread, anyone have suggestions/updates for folks looking at this again?

[ I admit, what slowed me down last time was trying to determine where I'd need cameras for good coverage and the realization that doing the cable runs would be somewhat complex in a few spots (not to mention the thought of getting the gear/positions approved by the HOA). ]

I have two of these set up in the back yard, incredible value. Records with milestone xprotect go free version, or sighthound. HOA approval was not an issue for us, submitted pics with locations and it was approved.

Attached are some pics of some of the guys working on the neighbors basement who got lost in our yard from time to time. First pic is zoomed in about 2x, the little box in the lower corner gives an idea of the entire view. Other pics are digitally zoomed in further. Nice having the 3MP resolution.

Sighthound is pretty cool since it pushes notifications to my iphone, only if it detects a person and a few other conditions.

Cable runs are simple if you can get some cat5 there you can do this easy. Even if you just have an outlet you could always try ethernet over powerline they are pretty inexpensive - have not tried that though.

also example of the night vision from a few minutes ago (just a screenshot of the pic on my iphone). I have the camera's infrared lights disabled (since I am using an external IR illuminator) but you get the idea, exposure is set to 1/60 s.

Thanks. How high up did you actually put your cameras to avoid tampering, etc.; but still end up close enough to get good pictures?

Our basement is finished, so that doesn't provide access to try and snake a cat5 up a wall. Last time I was debating if I'd have to come down from the attic, but worried the runs might get too long, but it looks like the costs on some PoE gear has come down, so getting 100m there might be workable.

Cameras in the back are ~3ft, the one out front is maybe 7 ft. Honestly I do not worry about tampering we are not designing a prison and when all is said and done this is still a really safe and nice place to live...My neighbor has one also at 7ft above the front garage door.

Sometimes people notice it which is maybe more of a deterrent, at least in some studies I guess. 95 out of 100 people never notice them, just like they don't notice the 13+ cameras at the costco gas pumps or the 12+ cameras around the checkout at the harris teeter.

If you want a good buy on cat 5 check out parts express clearance center 50ft belkin $6. Here is a diagram of how a ethernet over powerline would get hooked up. Pretty inexpensive to try.

Is 100m the limit to how long you can run POE without something like an extender? I'd have the same issues with where to run the cable...if I did this I'm thinking it would be a good idea to go the DVR route if the camera is going to be reachable (i.e., avoid the scenario where someone could just reach up an yank out the SD card).

You may not need that much cable. I ran cat6 for one of my cameras from outside, through the garage, down to the basement, across the house and then back up to my office. I used around 60ft I think of the 100ft cable I bought.

If the run is too long or difficult, try powerline ethernet. If the 2 plugs are on the same circuit you are good to go. The adapters are really cheap. I bought one for a tivo box, unfortunately the rooms are on separate circuits but it still works ok.

You could also consider wireless, hikvision has several cameras now with it.

Btw, if you want to go cheap (I did) buy a western digital 2tb mycloud drive on amazon for $150. The camera connects to it fine to record, and the software is all on the camera (hikvision).

Kicking this thread again–I'm wondering if anyone has tried some of the NAS options to work with cameras instead of having a computer set up to do the monitoring/alerting/recording?

The Hikvision cameras do all the work themselves (monitoring/alerting/recording). I use a 2TB MyCloud NAS drive for storage. Cheapest method I could find at the time.

Zoneminder is free and should be ported over to FreeNAS soon. In the mean time you can run it on a laptop and set mount point to NAS.
