Today around 6:15pm, some young female ( I didn't catch her name but I think she called herself Lisa) stood in my driveway in front of my garage asking if she could talk to me...she was wearing her hair in a ponytail, purple shirt, and yoga (?) pants. I asked her if she was trying to sell me something and she said no....but she showed me her iPhone with the names of people and asked me if they were living at my house....I looked at her and at the phone and felt bothered by the fact she was asking me personal questions about these people...I ordered her off my property. She just wrote something down and moved onto the next house... Called the police and told them that I found it strange that someone was going from house to house asking if the names of the people on the phone was living in the house....I dunno what she was trying to do but I was in the middle of my project in the garage when she asked if she could talk to them about something and if they lived in my house. I told her that I didn't want to answer any questions....she didn't even show any IDs as she had a clipboard with her and all that.

Be aware that affirming information on their phone isn't required or necessary. The police now are looking for her to ask her where she's getting these names from and why she's going door to door questioning if they live at that address. They felt it was strange---

    Probably a political solicitation.

Why didn't you ask her for her credentials and why she wanted your private information? Always screen someone whether or not you divulge information...

Could be any number of scenarios here. With all the break-in attempts happening around here, I am really surprised that people still go door to door and don't expect to be immediately dismissed by homeowners. I don't blame you at all for telling the person to leave.

This could go both ways. I'm sure people who have the job of going door to door don't like it either, including my teen who does that to sell football discount cards every year.

I absolutely understand the need to be cautious and not give out personal information, but courtesy never goes out of style.

    Just my opinion.

No, I didn't say you shared information. Whether they are taking a survey or soliciting donations - it is your right to question them if they are on your property. And since you never said why they were asking for your information, I assumed you did not ask.

    Knock on the door:
Who are you? Ask to see their ID and permit. Normally, they will introduce themselves and show you their badge or something showing affiliation with a political party or business, etc.
What do you want? If they are soliciting money for a cause, I will tell them I do not hand out cash and ask for the website, business card, or something that I can research if I am interested.
And finally, if I am not interested..I tell them 'no, thank you, I'm not interested 'in participating,' or 'contributing,' or 'it's not in my budget,' or 'I just got new windows recently, etc.

Sometimes they can be pushy and a simple 'no' and close the door is necessary but oftentimes a simple 'no, thank you' is all it takes.

I'm to the point I never answer the door anymore. There is nothing anyone is selling that I care to buy and find the solicitors annoying at best.

I have been doing that for years. Nothing like ringing doorbells at dinner time. Since phone sales don't work now they come to your door.

The worst thing is to give the appearance that no one is home. You can always yell through the door 'we're not interested.'

I have a sign that reads:

    Please
    No soliciting
We have already chosen our charities
We know who we're voting for
    Thank you!

    Its worked for years.

Just so you know ... if it was an election volunteer, what she was doing was considered *canvassing, which is protected first-amendment speech.* It is legally NOT considered soliciting. Canvassers are not required to have a permit. If one registered voter in the home is not interested in speaking with the canvasser, the canvasser is supposed to ask whether the other voters at that address are available. If no one in the household is interested in participating in the election survey or receiving literature, the person answering the door should simply and politely tell the canvasser to mark the voters there as "refused/not interested." The canvasser is then supposed to leave - Calling the police should not be necessary.

I know someone who has a sign that says something like, "Please do not ring our doorbell or knock on our door if we have not specifically invited you to our home. Thank you."

I like PP Power's comment above: "I absolutely understand the need to be cautious and not give out personal information, but courtesy never goes out of style."

Why is that the worst thing? Just curious.

For me, we are always home. Cars in the driveway, lights on, voices able to be heard on the porch. Just not interested in stopping my activity to "yell through a door"/open the door when the easiest thing is to ignore them.

Because a lot of robberies occur during the day when no one is home.

Oh...I'm not worried about that. You can tell no one is home when there are no cars in the driveway. No one uses their garage!

Plus, dogs. Nobody is breaking in my house. The dogs are always here and sound really mean though, they are not.

In New Hampshire one of my neighbors had two Dobermans. He was robbed and they took the dogs.
