My comments for the board members re: the pool discussion. @vacliff @Mr. Linux @Dawne

I don't think it had to be about the extremes brought by the various sides in the discussion.

You don't need to give people a specific forum to voice their input - simply give them an opportunity to voice their feedback, support, or concern. If people don't take that option, then you can at least say they had the opportunity. This doesn't need to be a big formality, just make people AWARE and give them an AVENUE to do so. AKA you don't need a town hall, simply give people NOTICE, a way to respond, and a way to engage directly in conversation if desired. You have that with your communications methods and board meetings already. The missing piece today is the AWARENESS and notice of the topic. It's buried right now.

You don't have to leave the door wide open on 'what' - just tell them your justification for what you are proposing, and ask if their views support your line of thinking. If people have alternate suggestions, you don't have to quote every idea... just listen to the input for things that may make sense, and take the feedback into the decision process. The board is still acting on their authority, but at least you've opened the door to suggestions. Listening does not mean needing to act out fully on every suggestion.

    Simply tell people
"we have a pool that needs repair, and we would spend X dollars to bring it back to a serviceable level. Or, we are proposing instead of spending that money replacing an amenity that is not well utilized. We are considering instead to spend Y to replace it with a rec pool which reference ABC believes will do 1,2,3 instead. We believe it will do 3,4,5 and is a good investment because..

Would you prefer the board repair the existing amenity, replace it with a rec pool, remove the amenity, do or something else with it?"

It doesn't have to be an open referendum on everything under the sun. The responses that go that way, filter what's important, and toss the rest. It's not like you're going to get 10,000 responses to go through :) You can even add context to what the dollar amount means relative to other expenses to diffuse 'zOMG I could do so much with X dollars' thinking.

    This way you
    - NOTIFY people of the specific discussion, so those interested can speak up
    - Give people an opportunity to get involved if they want to
    - Open the floor for alternate ideas that may not have come up yet
    - Have the ability to at least sample what the response to the idea would be

It's not hard definitive conclusions, but you've at least given people notice and opportunity to get engaged. Like Cliff said, this is unlike normal refurbishment work because you are discussing CHANGING amenities...

I am sorry I missed this. What is happening? A potential change for the CC pool? Was anything decided? What were the proposed timelines?

    short version...

kiddie pool at Community Center needs repair. kiddie pool at Community Center is not used. They solicited a bid to replace the kiddie pool with a small 'recreation pool' - one to play volleyball/bb in.. to the tune of about 135k if I recall

There is debate if there should be more community input... if we should do it at all.. would that maybe change the profile of CC pool to make it more attractive for outside use.. etc

135K? o_O That's a lot.... That's $$$$ that can buy about three/four cars right there. I'm sure the rec pool no doubtedly will be built to accommodate for the few at the expense of the majority that probably won't ever use it.

I suggest the $$ be used for something else that benefits the community at large instead for the few that will use it. The money will go farther in that respect but again, I'm not on the board so my words probably will be taken with a grain of salt.

Thanks...we spent many a warm day at that kiddie pool when the kids were little. A new concept would be pretty cool. Now the little tykes just play on their phones anyway and hardly anyone uses it.

    1) your words do matter - and I think generally the board does listen. That's not to say one voice against is the reason to NOT do something, but in general I think the board is open to sound feedback. Their job is to balance that with the multiple needs

    2) 135k sounds like a lot without context... and I think that is part of the concern about when such things are discussed with 'the general public' - my point is the board should educate the community on what that kind of spend looks like relative to other options or things we already do. For instance... what if it cost 80k to just repair the pool as it stands.. and the result is a healthy pool... that no one uses? Is 135k a smaller number now in people's view? Or what if you put the number in context of what we spend on other projects? Point being... 135k spent by a commercial entity is NOTHING like 135k spent as an individual... and that's all most home owners know. So any discussion of cost needs to be framed up by setting the table of what 'reasonable' costs look like when you are operating as this community entity.. not your home budget.

Yes, the budget numbers are out there, but most people do not familiarize themselves with them. So if you ask an uninformed audience to make a decision around how expensive something is or not.. you'll likely get poor quality responses. So discussion needs some 'assists' so people at least can get over the shock value of a number, before deciding if it's a worthwhile investment, etc.

For me, I did not see any specifics on the plans... but something so specialized and SEPARATE, did not seem like something we should run towards. I'd like to see how wide of usage it would really get, over the 10+ years lifespan. The baby pool seems like a dead-end so I'm more of a 'pull it out and replace with nothing' or pick an alternate use.

All opinions matter and I know there will be more information forthcoming.
I think it is extremely important that we hear from the residents.
If the Board is going to spend $130,000 of your money on something, I want it to be something people want and will use.
The pools in general cost a lot of money to maintain and operate.

Personally, I would prefer we invest in sustainable landscaping which would benefit the entire community.

Why not? Why sole source only? Reason?

I believe the reason given was that the same company had won the bid to redo the Community Center pool so it was felt there was no reason to rebid it.
Some one can correct me if my recollection is incorrect.
