Currently have a NetGear FS108 Ethernet switch previously installed by Openband during initial construction. Would I gain any performance improvement by replacing it with a NetGear GS108 Copper Gigabit switch? Thanks in advance.

Bandit - I am sure some of the networking gurus will chime in with additional details but think of your Network as a whole. From the Fiber goes into a converter and then into the standard 8 port switch that came with your system.

Now, I assume that you have a router attached to that for additional wired/wireless support? And then you likely have TVs, computers, cell phones, tablets etc. in the house. If you only upgrade the switch to Gigabit capability, you could help some of the devices in your house with speed, but if your router is 100 megabit then you have a potential bottleneck because it is slower than your switch.

In general, for the benefit of future upgrades and expansion options, I would go with a gigabit switch. But just sayin that you might not achieve the full potential of the gigabit benefits....

Thanks for the insight, Zeratul. I agree with you on the concept and am seriously thinking about changing out the switch. There's not much I can do about Openband's somewhat questionable inbound glass performance but I think the GS108 paired with the ASUS RT-AC68U gigabit router that I already have in place may be a good combination to improve the performance from the wall out.

Yes agree, since you already have a gigabit router it should help your network speed improve. I upgraded mine to all gigabit a couple years ago, partly because I was doing a lot more video and music streaming and it helped in my case quite a bit.

If you don't mind me asking...what did you go with?

This is the switch I went with... and as you will see on Amazon, it is really popular. It has worked great. I needed to add a whole bumch more ports so it leaves room for expansion too. I have it mounted on a plywood wall I added next to the Network interface.

Will verizon provide an upgraded switch? Or should I buy a new one. What about the router that they provide? Is it a good one? I want to make sure that once Verizon comes in, our internet is as good as it can be. We haven't done anything to the original setup from 2006.
