Interesting - I scheduled the return of my OpenBand cable equipment for mid June this past week (which was the earliest they had an appointment).

Today - I received a mail stating that I do not need to return the equipment:

...we had an appointment set up to retrieve your boxes but we will not need to do that.

Now that the Openband video system is shut down in Broadlands we no longer need the cable equipment returned.

Please dispose of the video equipment according to Loudoun County’s posted guidance on Electronics Recycling:
    https://www.loudoun.gov/408/County-Electronics-Recycling-Events

    Thank you,

    Jayme Patterson

Nice how they now make the disposal of the equipment my problem and not theirs. OpenBand should be required to pick up or create a drop off center for residences and not make it our responsibility.

Up until last night it was their equipment and I was leasing - not to own mind you.

What are they going to do with this stuff? It probably costs more money to pay their workers to drive out and pick it up.

They should take corporate responsibility for their equipment and have a plan to take back all of the equipment they leased me. I get that it costs money - but that's the cost of doing business - maybe poorly in this case.

Wow environmentally irresponsible letting everyone dispose of their equipment. How many will end in the trash. Guess OB is no longer so they don't care.

The people who improperly dispose of their equipment would be those who are environmentally irresponsible.

You are correct - but since the equipment is the responsibility of OpenBand, they should take care of the disposal of the equipment. I would suspect that it would cost them additional $$ AFTER picking up the equipment at our homes. Instead, they chose to abandon the equipment and put the burden on Loudoun County by having people bring the equipment to the electronics disposal event. This is not free for the county - someone is paying for those items to be disposed of. I bet OpenBand couldn't bring a truck full of equipment to this event and unload it on the county - but with this letter they just did.

So does anyone know where we could take them for proper disposal?

OK, so I called the link provided above and he was very helpful. Here are some local options for disposing of the Openband equipment (SWHOA feel free to share via email, newsletter etc to residents):

"Thank you for reaching out to Loudoun County Department of General Services about electronics recycling options.

As we discussed, Loudoun is currently not hosting any electronics recycling events, however, here are some other local options. It is recommended that residents first review the corresponding websites for details and limitations.

Best Buy Stores https://www.bestbuy.com/site/services/recycling/pcmcat149900050025.c?id=pcmcat149900050025 (open daily for drop off, accepts up to three electronic components per residence per day, fees for televisions and computer monitors)

Securis (Chantilly) https://www.securis.com/residential/ (monthly residential collection events, fees for televisions and computer monitors)

Forever Green Recycle (Chantilly) https://www.forevergreenrecycle.com/items_we_accept (open Monday through Saturday for drop off, does not accept televisions)

Goodwill Industries (Sterling) https://www.dcgoodwill.org/locations/sterling-virginia-store-donation-center/ (open daily, accepts computers and computer monitors only, do not need to be in working condition, no charge)

Please let me know if I may be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

I just switched from DirecTV to Fios and the DirectTV representative said that the satellite is mine. After I asked, the representative said that I can try earth911 for options. I found that DirecTVpartners with GoodElectronics for recycling (http://www.goodelectronicsrecycling.org/DIRECTV).

They won't last long as a company if they're letting former customers keep satellites.

I live on a street full of rentals so some of the rooftops have 3 -4 dishes on the roof. Seems they should be able to reuse them if the new tenant (or owner) wants DirectTV.

Maybe hold on to these items and bring them in the next time Broadlands HOA does the Community Electronics recycle event. I brought big heavy tv there and it was super easy.
